A little of the old Route 66 lives on in this small roadside motel plunked in the middle of Santa Monica’s trendy Main Street dining and shopping strip. Just two blocks from the beachfront biking path, it might be the best bargain going for beach-lovers who don’t have to see water right outside their window. The staff is unfailingly friendly and helpful. Despite the nondescript exterior, rooms offer 27-inch flat-screen HDTVs, terra-cotta tile floors, granite counters, and refrigerators; coffeemakers, tea kettles, microwaves, toasters and beach gear are available for the asking. The rooftop deck is prime territory at sunset. Spacious suites for as many as six people are an especially good deal, and they book well in advance.
