Cleverly disguised as dive bar (which it partly is), this is a nugget of history on a multimillion-dollar plot of land near the Santa Monica Pier. The creaky classic was opened by the late Jay “Peanuts” Fiondella, an old-timer who staunchly refused to sell to developers. Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Peter Sellers, Kevin Spacey, Madonna, George Clooney have all been regulars here. The popular rumor is that astronaut Alan Shepard took a peanut from Jay’s to the moon and back , then a mischievous Steve McQueen tried to eat it. Of course, there’s a jukebox in the corner, a marlin mounted on the wall, peanut shells on the floor, and well-worn red vinyl booths. They serve a great steak, and the bar is just the type where you’d expect to find Brando or Sinatra. On the waterfront, look for the neon sign and the wooden door with a little porthole on the east side of Ocean Avenue, 1/2 block south of the pier.
