About our rating systemNot everyone knows that thousands of African Americans, mostly slaves, fought during the Civil War. This modestly sized museum displays old photographs, maps, letters, and inventories, along with ankle shackles worn by slaves and other artifacts accompanied by text to tell the stories of the United States Colored Troops and the African-American involvement in the American Civil War. Walk across the street to view the African American Civil War Memorial. A semicircular Wall of Honor curves behind the sculpture; etched into the stone are the names of the 209,145 United States Colored Troops who served in the Civil War.
