America’s 28th president’s final residence is preserved as he left it. The story here focuses on Wilson’s Washington years (1912–24), examining his public persona while allowing a peek behind the draperies into his and his wife Edith’s personal life, much of it quite tragic. Furnishings, White House objects, personal memorabilia, and elaborate gifts of state from all over the world help tell the story. A mosaic of St. Peter hangs in the drawing room, a gift from Pope Benedict XV when the Wilsons toured Europe at the conclusion of World War I. A portrait of his wife Edith hangs above the mantle. You must book a spot on a 1-hour guided tour to access the interior of the house. Some specialty tours, focusing on topics like architecture or Prohibition, are also offered by appointment only.
