Hidden on a tranquil pier between the bay and Fisherman’s Wharf’s bustling main shopping street, this old-school San Francisco seafood restaurant would be worth visiting even if it didn’t offer free valet parking(!) in the middle of Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s even more worthwhile since the menu got a makeover a few years back. Plates piled high with crispy fried calamari, fish and chips, cioppino, and Dungeness crab Thermidor all showcase the restaurant’s “pier to plate” commitment to bring you native seafood caught by small local fishermen. It’s got lots of dining nooks and interesting views of the city’s workaday bayfront; there’s also a reasonably priced kids menu of classics (think chicken nuggets). For lunch on the wharf, this is always my first choice. Bonus: A renovation of the bar and dining room a few years ago kept the 1960s vintage vibe, which is a very good thing.
