Now That's Good and Fare: Europe on the Cheap When it's Chilly

The discount travel operator specializing in low cost airfare and other travel discounts to Europe such as car rentals, cell phone rentals and hotels is quickly becoming a travel resource for lovers of Western Europe.

Europe is known for sophistication, art, culture, style, fine cuisine and old world charm. Yet many travelers are deterred by the price tag that accompanies these uniquely European experiences. 1800FlyEurope (tel. 800/359-3876; www.1800flyeurope.com), a reliable fare consolidator, may change all that. The discount travel operator specializing in low cost airfare and other travel discounts to Europe such as car rentals, cell phone rentals and hotels is quickly becoming a travel resource for lovers of Western Europe.

Having recently announced their winter fares, 1800FlyEurope is offering a roundtrip fare of $189 base price from New York to London and a $289 price tag to Paris from the Big Apple. Other great deals out of New York include $311 to Rome, $261 to Amsterdam, $333 to Barcelona and Madrid, and $278 to Frankfurt.

In addition to New York, other markets yield some great savings. From London to Cleveland, roundtrip airfare will cost you $222 excluding tax. Other great fares to London include $344 roundtrip from Dallas, $294 out of Chicago, $279 out of Atlanta, $220 from Boston, and $356 from Los Angeles.

Normally enjoying a Roman holiday is quite an expensive undertaking but 1800FlyEurope has some low-priced fares into the Italian architectural wonder. Prices to Rome start from $333 leaving Philadelphia, $356 from Atlanta, $399 from Minneapolis, $409 from Houston, $424 from Denver, and $356 all the way from Phoenix.

These fares are good for roundtrip travel from November 11 until December 10, 2005 and from January 10, 2006 through March 15, 2006. All 1800FlyEurope prices are roundtrip excluding fuel and security taxes. Those terms include a $10 security fee and departure taxes up to $80 with fuel charges mounting as high as $90. Foreign departure taxes of up to $45 may also be applicable. Your fare is guaranteed once your credit card is authorized.

Fortunately with 1800FlyEurope fares, there is no "purchase by" date. Since fares are based on availability, however, 1800FlyEurope phone representatives (who are very helpful) recommend calling at least a week before you plan on departing and urge booking even further in advance to lock in those fares. Conveninately 1800FlyEurope has no black out dates, so travel during high season is still cheap. However, the fare consolidator offers fewer flights or none at all during the busy holiday season when demand is inordinately high. Expect to pay around $20 more on weekends which in most cases are from Friday through Sunday. Be advised that certain airlines such as British Airlines consider Thursday a weekend day and those small surcharges may apply. There is little to no price difference when traveling on a mid-week flight.

Other 1800FlyEurope specials: a Spanish vacation this winter to Madrid will run you $316 from Boston, $333 from Philadelphia and New York, $377 from Miami and Orlando, $339 from either Dallas or Houston, $461 from Los Angeles or San Francisco, but only $338 from Seattle. See the winter sale grid for more prices from other European cities.

As for hotels, rental cars, and cell phones, 1800FlyEurope provides deals and specials on a host of available services. The site's search engine yielded hotels in Paris ranging from approximately $68 to $277 for a four-night stay in mid-November. Rental car savings include 30 percent off on Mercedes Benz or sports car rentals in many of Europe's more glamorous pit stops including St. Tropez, Cannes, Nice, Paris, Milan or Rome. In the all-important cell phone department, go to for a quick and easy reference and price list for available cell phones. Rentals start at around $77 per week or $220 per month for a Nokia bar phone or its equivalent with fax/data cards costing $3 per day. For a Mobiq satellite hookup for a good connection from "very" remote places, expect to pay $296 per week and $4.95 per minute. There's no such thing as a desert island with that phone.
