A bargain from American Express? An under-the-counter fare from America's most distinguished travel company? Believe it! For the past several years, an American Express retail outlet has been placing tiny nationwide ads (rarely more than half an inch deep, a column wide) in distinguished U.S. newspapers claiming it can enable you to "Save 60% First/Business".
It's a real-life American Express agency, making copious use of the classic American Express logotype and other design features. It's located at an out-of-the-center 108 W 81st St in New York City, and alternates between the use of two different telephone numbers: a toll-free 800/435-8776, and a local 212/201-1824. Its website is Cookamerican.travel (www.cookamerican.travel).
And finally, it adds another world-famous name -- "Cook" -- to its title (thus, "Cook American Express Travel"), but never explains the identification. Despite all the confusion, it boldly offers "Last Minute Business Class Deals" and "Last Minute Domestic & Economy Deals", stressing (in its website) that it mainly provides cut-rate tickets for All Nippon Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines.
I'd be interested to learn whether any of our readers have successfully used Cook American Express. I've seen these ads for years, have always been intrigued by them, but have never myself purchased a business class or first class ticket.
I have used them many times and have saved a good deal of money on business class tickets to Europe and China. They tell me they are an affiliate of American Express and specialize in net fare tickets, and consolidator tickets in business and first class internationally.
They also have many upgrades and other discounts. Once when the fare they first offered was the same as the published sale fare, they gave me a $100 American Express gift card.
I always call them --- after sending an email --- since they get a good many requests and sometimes don't answer requests that are for travel many months in the future.
On bad part is that they don't have much in the way of domestic travel or coach tickets. I have used other consolidators in the past, and have a great deal of confidence in these people because of their Amex affiliation. Also they answer the phones.
I have used them.. They don't offer half off sale fares, although they offer a couple of hundred off what the airlines are charging, but if you have a last minute flight without advance purchase, they can get you a good deal.
I was flying home to London for a last minute visit and they were able to get me a ticket for $3,200 instead of what the airlines were pricing at over $6,000.
They also were able to use my American Express Reward points to pay for the ticket..
