China Spree Has Thrown Down a Big China Challenge -- A Remarkable $888 Air-and-Land Winter Package
The battle among tour operators to China is heating up. Yesterday morning, China Spree Travel (www.chinaspree.com) announced that in the months of January and February, it would offer an eight-night, three-city (Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai) air-and-land package for $888 per person based on flights to China from San Francisco (you add $300 to the price for departures from New York City).

And the feisty China Spree (its president, Wilson Wu, has often buttonholed me at regional travel shows to tout the quality and low price of his tours, or to advise of his intention to become the biggest operator of tours to China) has used some pretty confident language to accompany the gauntlet he has now tossed down. "While the Golden Triangle [name of the $888 program] may be the lowest-priced tour on the market," says the company's press release, "it's also the best-quality, with more included features than any other."

That's not quite so. The program does not include daily dinners, as the others do (in fact it provides no evening meals at all), and consists of only eight nights in China, as compared with China Focus' nine nights. However, I regard the elimination of dinner as a plus, enabling you to make your own choice of the many fine restaurants in these three cities. (The inclusion of meals in China packages usually condemns you to eat in tourist-oriented restaurants of less-than-gourmet level; you always eat better when you strike out on your own).

Anyway, China Focus' $888 package for January and February, going to the three top cities of China, supplies a major travel lure in these two frigid months. I'd give it strong consideration.

But it will be interesting to see how the other tour operators to China respond. Stay tuned.

We traveled with China Spree in October 2007--18 days in Beijing, Xian, Guilin & Shanghai. It was a wonderful trip, top-notch all the way. A group of only 14, a knowledgeable and caring guide, fabulous accommodations. We highly recommend this company.

After considering China Spree, I went on the Best of China tour with Friendly Planet in August. We ran into lots of "China Sprees" everywhere we went in China. They seemed to have very large and unorganized groups with lots of elderly seniors. No offense to the seniors but my wife and I are 30 something and we like fast moving vacations with lots of activities.

Our group, which was only 8 of us, frequently had to go around the "China Sprees" at all of the sites because they could not navigate them efficiently. We definitley saw more and got more included with our tour with Friendly Planet than we would have with China Spree.

In response to csantistevan

First of all we did not, unfortunately, have a lot of China Spree tours in August, due to the fear of Swine Flu quarantine.

Secondly, none of the groups in August exceeded 20 people (the average group size is 14 people in August). China Spree is the only tour operator on the market that sells comprehensive vacation packages at budget prices but intentionally keeps the group size small. On average, our group size is 10-16 people and the maximum is 24, which is rarely reached because any group that large is usually split into smaller subgroups.

Thirdly, we did not have a lot of seniors in China Spree groups in August in particular. According to our accurate calculation performed today, 91% of China Spree tour members in August 2009 were under 60 years old. Actually, China Spree travelers are younger than other tour company's. They are active travelers, because China Spree tours have more included features than any other tour operator, and that requires our tour participants to be dynamic travelers. We actually work our clients hard—they are on tour from 8 am to 8 pm almost every day.

China Spree tours are very well organized and surely our clients know how to navigate efficiently. As a matter of fact, China Spree clients are mostly smart and seasoned travelers; they shop and compare hard, and can tell the difference between China Spree tours and all others, and eventually choose China Spree knowing we offer the best value for their travel dollar. This is backed by hundreds of reviews on China Spree tours on Frommers China Forum and on Trip Advisor.

For the 10-Day “China’s Golden Triangle” we don’t have that many included features as we do for all other tours because it is a shorter version of our popular 12-Day “The Middle Kingdom” tour and it is competitively priced for those who want a shorter vacation and who are looking for more flexibility in their travel schedule. We have included all the “must-see” highlights; meanwhile offer affordable optional excursions to other attractions. We intentionally exclude all dinners so our clients can try the real Chinese food on their own. Directions and recommendations of the good local Chinese restaurants will be given to our clients as part of our service.

By doing so we hope our clients can “experience the unique flavor and activity of that city. Walk about at your own speed, interact with the merchants and other persons you meet, attempt to gauge and experience the human elements of the city, order a coffee, browse a bookstore, tour a museum or other famous sight on your own, have a meal.”

Happy Travel!

I traveled with China Spree on a 16 day China and Yangtze and can't imagine it being anything like you said. Our group was 11 people and as such we could get in and out of places more easily than other groups and got to see a lot MORE because of it. We had to navigate a lot around other groups that were usually one of the other "China somethings" that take huge groups out and you spend most of your time shopping!

Our group ranged from 8 and 10 year old girls to middle age to seniors that were all on the go constantly and we saw a LOT in a short amount of time. I am amazed to this day with how much they showed us and accomplished with the money, especially when I talk to friends who took other tours. It was one of the most organized trips I had ever seen and didn't waste any time at all. They took care of everything with top tier accomodations and a great mix of sightseeing and free time. Wilson works with you personally a lot of the time even! I loved having one guide and a regional guide for each place we visited and they let us in on many things that normally you wouldn't get on a "box" tour. I came back with knowledge and insight into the culture that none of my friends had because of our great guides and attention to detail.

I would recommend China Spree to anyone because of their great value, attention to detail and the sheer amount of thing you see and learn in a short amount of time!

Regarding csantistevan's comment regarding China Spree tours consisting of large, unorganized groups of seniors is a total falsehood. We took the China Spree 15 day tour of China and Hong Kong, and our group only had 10 people in it. We met other people on our trip who were travelling with China Spree, and they didn't have big groups either. We ran into a couple of other tours that had over 40 people on their tours, (not China Spree) Their rule is a limit of 24 people per tour, plus the fast pace of these tours would necessitate the participants to be in very good physical shape or they would not be able to keep up. The activity level is very high from morning until evening, and every minute was accounted for and super organized at all times. I seriously doubt that the Friendly Planet tour saw any more than any China Spree tour did. In fact, we were taken to places that we didn't see any other tourists and got to mingle with local people doing their every day activities in the morning exercising and we played mah jong in the local tea house, much to the amusement of the locals. Our guide always took our requests into consideration into planning the day and changed things to fit our plans. We were very happy with our tour.

In response to Csantisvan's comment, my husband and I are now planning for our second tour with China Spree after having had the privilege of joining one of their May, 2008 Middle Kingdom Tours. Our small group of 12 multi-age levels of individuals thoroughly appreciated the professionalism of the China Spree team - the passionate and knowledgeable tour guides who we admired as splendid "ambassadors" for China, the well-appointed hotels, the variety of meals, the efficient transportation modes throughout the tour of five cities in 12 days ... need I say more? Added to the fact that my husband and I are well-seasoned travellers to many other countries and we also do our share of research, I can, without any reservation, highly recommend China Spree to anyone who is seeking to explore modern China.
