In my many critical essays about TripAdvisor.com, I have inferred -- without directly saying so -- that many of the people who submit hotel and restaurant reviews to that popular website are not the kind of experienced, sophisticated travelers on whose judgment I would like to rely.
That rather understated opinion was given great support yesterday by a poll conducted by TripAdvisor.com, in which respondents were asked to state their opinions about European cities. And here's how the poll turned out, according to a story in the Sydney Morning Herald:
Holidaymakers, be warned: London has the worst food, Paris is the most overrated and Brussels is the most boring, according to a survey of what travelers think about European cities.
In the poll of nearly 2400 travellers, by website TripAdvisor, the British capital was voted the dirtiest in Europe, home to the worst-dressed people and the most expensive. Paris did not come off any better, with travelers saying it was the least friendly city, and the second-most expensive.
…Prague was picked as the best bargain destination…
You will forgive me if I refuse to follow the travel advice of people who regard the ultra-costly Prague "as the best bargain destination," the fastidious British as the "worst-dressed," and Paris as "overrated."
There was no information on who conducted the poll on European capitals or what its confidence level was. Shame on any news media that would publish the story. I can guarantee that the poll takers found no one who had visited all 49 European capitals recently enough to give an informed opinion.
I am sure the cheap beer in Prague is why people say it is a bargain destination. I don't think it has been a bargain in over 10 years! And Paris as overrated? Come on! I could go there 1,000 times and still want to go back. It is one of the most incredible destinations.
I'm always surprised by the negative comments that TripAdvisor generates from other travel websites. I'm not a travel professional, just someone who loves to travel for pleasure. I've contributed a number of honest hotel reviews to the site and always research potential lodging on TripAdvisor prior to any vacation. I never take anything I read on any travel website as gospel - just as a guide. I disagree with every top response in that poll but that doesn't mean TripAdvisor isn't a useful resource to me and many other people.
I agree, TripAdvisor often leaves something to be desired. But for many destinations, it's still the best place I've found to gather recent reviews of local hotels. If there were a better site out there, I'd be all over it.
As those who have written before me, I cringe when TripAdvisor gets panned, in the past 6 years (post retirement)we have traveled quite extensively throughout Europe & North America and have found TripAdvisor to an extremely useful tool. Yes one must be cautious in weeding out the obvious comments that have been seeded, as you do with those that don't represent a reasonable point of view. This is fairly easily done! I have found when traveling that it is so expensive that one needs to invest in multiple sources for information including Frommers Guide books, and sites like The Thorn Tree & TripAdvisor. The more opinions and research...the better the trip. Love your commentaries Arthur but you are off base with criticism of TripAdvisor. I have used them as one of my references for dozens of stays and it has never led me astray.
Obviously, AF’s newphew is not one of the immigrants who not too long ago rioted in the streets over their economic conditions nor one of the those impacted by the very high unemployment rate which has persisted for more than a decade.
The birth rate of this “happy” society is so low there is great concern about continuity of their economy.
The have’s are happy, but the have-not, don’t even have hope.
Another biased review of a competitor. Are user review sites perfect? No, but they sure provide a lot more info. On several recent trips, Frommer’s had only a couple reasonably priced restaurants while we found a bunch on the "user" sites that proved very rewarding.
The poll is just fluff to market tripadvisor.
