Along the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak is Now Charging Weekend Fares Starting at $23 Each Way
There is, as yet, no indication of how long these fares will be valid -- and there is hope they remain a permanent part of Amtrak's fare structure. But starting immediately, a person who travels round-trip on the same Saturday, or goes one-way on Saturday and then returns home the next day (on Sunday), will pay as little as $23 each way. Tickets need to be purchased three days in advance, and a limit (hopefully a reasonable one) will be placed on the number of seats sold at these levels.

Examples of the new fares: New Haven, CT to Washington, D.C. $49 each way. New York to Boston or Alexandria, VA $49 each way. Philadelphia to Baltimore $32 each way. Washington, D.C. to Richmond, VA $23 each way. And so on. For the full list, see www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/am2Copy/Hot_Deals.

This is sensible pricing for routes that have long been over-priced. Mind you, the new weekend fares are far higher than you'd pay on the budget-buses, and the cost-conscious traveler will continue to favor BoltBus, FungWah, and the others (if they, in fact, service all these cities, and many of them don't). But for travelers insistent on the comfort of train travel, these new weekend fares should prove enormously popular.

Mr Frommer is advocating boycotting travel to Idaho, Montana (no more Glacier National Park), South Dakota (no more Badlands or Mt Rushmore), Wyoming (no more Yellowstone), New Mexico (no more Santa Fe) KY (no more Mammoth Cave), WV and VA (Shenendoah) along with Arizona (Grand canyon, Seguaro and the Painted Desert) just because he is too timid to be in a state where our 2nd amendment rights are proudly upheld?

let's also make sure we boycott travelling to South Africa, Congo, Somalia, India, Israel, Turkey, Brazil, Ecuador and most of the countries in Latin America...

but those afraid of law abiding citizens exercising their God given rights of protection can still go to Europe...

Arthur Frommer is a pansy a$$ travel hack that makes ignorant political statements and should stick to sending people to the Bahamas and keep out of politics. Why does this world need a wrinkled, early dementia riddled idiot who doesn't know SH1T about politics. It's true... Opinions are like A$$holes, everyone's got one. Some have and are bigger A$$holes then others.
