By Pauline Frommer

Hostelling International USA announced this week that it will be doing a good deed for those who, well, do good deeds. For the months of January and February, it will be giving away free hostel stays (of up to 5 nights) to groups of 10 who do some sort of service project. Amazingly, you only have to volunteer two hours of time to get the freebie (not that we're encouraging anyone to slack off)....

Point/Counterpoint: Pauline Frommer Gives Her Impressions of Colonial Williamsburg

By Pauline Frommer

I won’t lie: I was dragged, kicking and wailing, to Colonial Williamsburg. I thought the idea of spending Thanksgiving at the famed “living history museum” was a goofy one, and the rolling of my teenage daughter’s eyes when the plan, created by my father, was announced only confirmed that this was going to be a familial disaster. I expected a weekend of candle making and rock candy suckin...

We Visited an American Theme Park that Vanquishes Disney and Universal

Pauline and I, and our respective families, spent the Thanksgiving holidays at Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia.  And because CW doesn't enjoy anywhere near the attendance of the Disney parks or Universal, I thought it should receive the extremely favorable reaction we had to it.   Hence this blog.   In a nutshell (and forgive the dogmatism), Colonial Williamsburg ...

By Pauline Frommer

The internet is all wet. And that’s a good thing. In the last 2 years, or so, a number of companies have brought digital order to the fractured world of boat rentals, allowing would-be sailors to rent all sorts of vessels easily, and more important, more cheaply than before. One of the forums where seafarers are finding savings is GetMyBoat.com, a platform that connects vacationer...

New York City's New 9/11 Memorial Museum: A Review

By Pauline Frommer

For well over two millennia, humans have been telling one another stories of the dangers of looking back at evil or death. Lot’s wife turned to a pillar of salt because she dared glance over her shoulder into the maw of destruction. Orpheus lost his beloved forever for the same reason: he turned around before he’d reached the realm of light. And in a case of real life imitating, well, ico...

Getting Cheap Tickets to Broadway Shows Just Got Easier

By Pauline Frommer

In a savvy move—one likely intended to lure back those theatergoers buying discounted tickets online—the Theater Development Fund has changed the way the line is being handled at the TKTS booths in New York City. In short: if you buy a ticket within seven days of buying your next ticket, you get to jump to the front of the line. All you have to do is show the ticket from the last show, wh...

White House Tours Are On Again....For Now. Why You'll Want to Book Sooner Rather Than Later

By Pauline Frommer

Though it hasn't been publicly announced, word has leaked out--as tends to happen in Washington, DC--that the White House is now holding tours again. The website has been updated to reflect the change, which apparently does not have to do with any decision President Obama made. The tours were originally shuttered because the Secret Service simply didn't have the funding, thanks to the seq...

The How-To's of "Couch Surfing" From a True Expert

By Pauline Frommer

Last September, I got a call from a dear friend who’d just gotten a job playing harp in the orchestra of a Broadway touring production. Erin was hoping to save money on the road by staying with friends or friends of friends, but was having trouble finding the right connections. I suggested she try the website Couchsurfing.org, which introduces travelers to friendly people all over the world wh...

Thinking About a Dude Ranch Vacation This Summer? Tips from an Expert

By Pauline Frommer

The horse may just replace the racecar, space ship and James Bond-helmed motorboat as the whiz-bang mode of transportation this summer. I make that prediction after watching the trailers for the new, Johnny Depp-helmed (he’s Tonto) version of The Lone Ranger that will be hitting movie theaters this July and seems destined for blockbuster status. Every single preview features racing stallions, ...

Sure there’s sun and sand. But one of the unsung delights of summer---or should I say one of the most loudly crooned pleasures of the season---is summer stock. There’s something magical about heading out on a warm evening, entering a theater filled with other tanned and relaxed folks, and giving yourself up to a classical musical or play. And nowadays, summers have become a time not just for r...
