Tips from the Publisher: Grand Deal to the Grand Canyon

I just received information from Xanterra Parks and Resorts, operator of the lodges in Grand Canyon National Park, and wanted to share the good news with you.

Xanterra is offering a deeply discounted "Grand American Getaway" vacation package for overnight visitors to the South Rim, between August 11 and September 12.

For $79 per night, plus tax, guests receive a room for two at the Yavapai East Lodge, a motorcoach tour, breakfast and a 10% discount in most of the gift shops. Bringing the kids? Add another $9 for each additional person in your room. The total cost for this package would normally exceed $170.

It's interesting, so late in the season, that there would still be rooms available at the country's most popular national park. The main reason? A decline in international travelers and group tours, and an increase in the number of Americans traveling by car.

You can purchase the Getaway package by calling 888/297-2757 or 303/297-27757. Mention the code GETPR to receive the package.

As I pointed out earlier this month, visitors to the Grand Canyon owe it to themselves to walk down into the canyon and not just drive along the rim. You should also try to visit some nearby parks; Arches and Canyonlands are among my favorites. Be sure to look into the National Parks Pass, which can make your trip even more affordable and flexible.
