Carnival Corp. Plans Company-Wide Safety & Emergency Response Review

In the wake of last Friday’s disastrous capsizing of Costa Concordia, Costa’s parent company, Carnival Corporation, today announced a comprehensive audit and review of safety and emergency response procedures across all of its cruise brands: Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess, P&O Cruises, P&O Cruises Australia, Costa, Cunard, Seabourn, AIDA, and Iberocruceros.

Though maintaining that both its brands and the cruise industry as a whole have an excellent long-term safety record, the Concordia disaster “has called into question our company’s safety and emergency response procedures and practices,” said Carnival Corp. Chairman and CEO Micky Arison in a media statement. “While I have every confidence in the safety of our vessels and the professionalism of our crews, this review will evaluate all practices and procedures to make sure that this kind of accident doesn’t happen again.”

The review is being led by Capt. James Hunn, a retired U.S. Navy captain who currently holds the position of senior vice president of Maritime Policy & Compliance at Carnival Corp. Hunn and senior health and safety executives from each of Carnival Corp.’s cruise lines will review all safety and emergency response policies and procedures, officer and crew training and evaluation, bridge management, and company-wide response and support capabilities. Hunn will report to the Health, Environment, Safety & Security Committee of the Carnival Corp. board and to Howard Frank, the company’s vice chairman and chief operations officer.

The board committee is also engaging outside industry experts in emergency response organization, training, and implementation to audit all of the company’s emergency response and safety procedures and to conduct a review of the Concordia accident.

“This company-wide initiative will identify lessons learned and best practices to further ensure the security and safety of all of our passengers and crew,” said Howard Frank in the company’s media announcement.
