We will be traveling to Thailand towards the end of May for our honeymoon and want to spend the majority of our time in the islands, though we arrive in Bangkok and plan to spend 2-3 nights in Chang Mai. We plan to spend about 8-9 days in Thailand before going onto Bali. I'm quickly realizing that it won't be possible/practical to visit both the Koh Samui area and the Phuket area in that time frame, so I'd love some insight from people who have spent time in both regions. If we go to Koh Samui, we'll probably spend a couple nights in Koh Tao. If we go to Phuket, we'll probably spend a couple nights in Koh Phi Phi Don. They both look amazing! We don't scuba dive but we do love snorkeling and other water activities. We're not looking for wild nightlife........but we definitely want great food and an area that attracts more couples, than college backpacking partiers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you skipping Bangkok entirely and just landing there and hopping on another plane?  I would spend a couple nights in Bangkok at least even if you take the time away from another beach.  This way you would not have to worry about having time for connecting flights or too much time between flights.  Good transportation between Suvarnabhumi and the city area.   (All of Thailand is warm like summertime, you can even get a tan walking in Chiang Mai and Bangkok too!)

Here is a weather link.

Good luck.

Even though all the islands/beaches retain their own unique character and personality, IMO, if you see one you’ve seen them all. Plus you are going to Bali next, right? I didn’t go to Phuket/islands until my third visit to Thailand and Chiang Mai/north until my fourth. Thailand is amazing but Bangkok is its jewel. I don’t know about your hometown but probably you’re sick and tired of big cities … let me assure you; Bangkok is different in a surprisingly pleasant way especially for the first time visitor.

Bangkok is awesome and intoxicating ... I have listed some activities here: Six Nights in Bangkok ... I would devout more time to Bangkok, if I were you, but I do understand that you have time constraints. The heat, traffic, and pollution might be overwhelming but once you get used to them, you will be hooked. http://milepoint.com/forums/threads/six-nights-in-bangkok.4768/#post-184791
