Depending on the airline it takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 24 hours to get to Bangkok, more if you have a long layover. The longest layover I've ever seen was 13 hours in Seoul on Korean Air. Needless to say I took a different flight! Some layovers are in Tokyo or Osaka, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei or Seoul depending on the airline. Assume that the cheaper the ticket the longer the layover, although this is not always the case. There will always be a layover along the way, no non-stop flights except on Thai Airways from Los Angeles.

Some airlines allow a stopover at no extra charge. Sometimes I like flying Cathay Pacific and spending a day or two in Hong Kong.

I would highly recommend Cathay Pacific.

I flew with them March 2003 from Toronto. We had two delays due to bad weather and had to stay overnight in Vancouver and again in HK. The airline took very good care of us during these unscheduled stopovers and was very organized.

The plane crews and food are some of the best I have encountered.

Also, our luggage arived with us in spite of the two stopovers!

Cathay Pacific does have promotions so you should be able to get a good price on the airfare.

We just got back yesterday from a one month stay in Thailand. Singapore Airlines has the only direct flight from the USA to Singapore (currently only departures from New York and Las Angeles are non-stop. They were offering double frequent flyer miles when we departed on Sept. 27 for all non-stop flights from New York. Great deal if they are still offering (racks up about 50,000 miles in one trip!). The Singapore Air non-stop flights have only "executive economy class" seats and better. You get more leg room, better reclining seats, foot rests (like on a reclining lounge chair). Food and service is first class. Total flight time from Las Angeles to Singapore was 14.5 hours (non-stop). Then from Singapore, it was a 1.5 hour flight on Silk Airlines to Phuket, Thailand. The whole flight was much less wear and tear than the "cattle cars" in and out of Bangkok (although, that is the least expensive way to go if you are on a tight budget). Hope this helps! ~J&J
