Hi
I came to Bangkok a couple of weeks back. It was early in the morning and I was tired after a long flight. On the net I had briefly read that to get a taxi you should go to the counter and get a ticket and then go out and get a car. Once I had gotten my suitcase I went over to a taxi counter and said I wanted a taxi and the rate was a 1000 THB. I was a bit surprised that it was so expensive and I asked the guy behind the counter if this was the public taxi or where I had to go to find it. And he was like "No, there is no other taxi". So I got fed up and just took the taxi. I guess what I got was the AOT Limousine and not the public taxi. So study this close before you go to Bangkok: http://www2.airportthai.co.th/airportnew/sun/transportation1.asp?lang=en&sub=limousine . The taxi back to the airport was only 350 THB. I'm a bit embarrassed to tell this...I feel that I'm an experienced traveler and still I got tricked. I hope that other people will avoid this.

Regards

My friends and I were in Bangkok mid-July and managed to get a taxi to our hotel in the City Centre. I would advise you to get the taxi cabs at the outside of the airport entrance instead from the taxi counters located inside the airport itself. The rates were THB450 and that's for the whole taxi. Even on our return trip from the hotel to the airport was THB450. But be warned, the new airport is quite a distance from the city. It takes about 45 minutes and that's during off-peak, traffic free hour (which is quite rare in Bangkok itself!) with green lights all the way.

Getting from the new airport to the city is real easy!

First make sure you change some money over to Thai baht and include some small bills for paying the taxi driver.

IGNORE THE TOUTS IN THE ARRIVALS HALL!

Ignore the touts in the arrivals hall - they do provide rides but you will pay a lot for them!

Go to the bottom level of the airport, near door 7 is a taxi sign up desk. Have the address of your hotel available, the clerk will record the hotel address and tell the taxi driver where you want to go to. The taxi will use the meter. You are responsible for the meter fare plus any tolls if he uses the toll road. Probably to the Siam or Sukhumvit area you will pay two tolls, a 20 baht toll and a 45 baht toll. From the airport you are charged a 50 baht surcharge. You pay the meter fare, the surcharge and any tolls after you arrive at the hotel. No surcharge for rides to the airport from the city! Have small bills or the driver will say "no hava change" hoping you will say keep the change - a 500 baht note may be too big! Don't over tip! Many Thai's don't tip at all! Fare including everything will probably be around 350 baht, give or take 50 baht.

Early in the morning when there is no traffic the taxi cabs may not take the toll road - it's okay, ride is cheaper! Figure on around 30 minutes to get to your hotel. (Meter fare is for everyone you can safely fit in the taxi.) Toll charges are clearly posted on a sign at the toll gates.

If you arrive during the daytime or early evening there is an Airport Express bus. That Airport Express bus costs 150 baht and the kiosk is near door 8, bottom level. (Near the taxi sign up desk.) The Airport Express bus takes passengers close to many hotels in town. There are several routes. Two people sharing a taxi is around the same price as 2 people taking the bus, bus takes around twice as long to get into town! Airport Bus service stops around midnight!

There is also a decent regular bus station at the airport. Price of the city bus into town is only 35 baht. You have to take the free Shuttle Bus to get to the bus station. Shuttle bus to the bus station will take around 7 minutes. The bus station also has many buses going to other cities and provinces around Thailand.

In a year or two the Skytrain will reach the airport, until then no train service. The Skytrain in town usually stops running around 11 pm right now!

In town, for taxi rides - ONLY pay the meter fare! Bargaining the fare will only mean you will pay more! There seems to be thousands of meter cabs in town! Always hail a moving taxi, avoid parked taxi cabs in front of hotels or bus stations because they usually want to bargain the fare! Meter (air conditioned) taxi cabs are cheaper than Tuk-Tuks!

Happy trails.
