We are going to Bangkok the first week of Feb 2012. We are going to spend 3 months after arriving in Bangkok from Hong Kong. We have a return ticket from Bangkok to Hong Kong the first week of May to fly back to California. We haven't booked any places to stay or any locations in Thailand. We really love to be close to the beach. Does anyone have any suggestions on places to visit and any rentals that would be nice, especially long term ?We would like to stay under 3000 usd per month. Should we try to book a monthly rate before we leave the U.S., site unseen or should we wait until we arrive? Being seniors, we would really like to book before we leave. If anyone has any information or a location that they would recommend, it will be greatly appreciated. We would like to stay at a few different locations and are even open to short side trips to other countries, if possible. Thank all of you for helping. This forum is the reason we have decided to visit Thailand. Thank you again !

Do you have a visa that allows you to stay for that long?  I can see a 60 day tourist visa and an extension.  But know that you can't show up and stay as long as you want.

My suggestion for a place to stay at in Bangkok is in an area not far from the Skytrain route.   The Skytrain is an overhead rail service that connects many parts of Bangkok.  Connects with the new Airport Rail Link, connects with Ekamai bus terminal and also connects with the subway.

Finding a place under $3000 per month is pretty easy.  Many tourists are staying in Bangkok in hotel rooms at one third that price for an entire month.  Even cheaper in some places since a room with air, private toilet, TV and maid service that starts around 600 baht in Bangkok, or $20.

Some hotels will do a deal for a month.  This means you have free maid service, sometimes free breakfast (but breakfast is cheap anyway,) free use of electricity, free water, etc.     You can use a serviced apartment.   But some hotels may be closer to the main streets and rail service.  Similar to places below.

For 3 months I would go with a series of hotels.  No problem at all finding a hotel for under $50 a night that is not too bad.   This way you pick up your bags and head out to different cities and not be paying for a room sitting idle in Bangkok.   You may prefer to stay in Chiang Mai or find a date in Phuket - who knows!   You could just as well have a cheap hotel sitting idle in Bangkok as much as an expensive hotel.

Good luck.
