For our honeymoon, my fiance and I are thinking of visiting Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef for a week, followed by a week in Bora Bora. This will be at the beginning of October and we're flying from New York City. Has anyone done this? Is there a better Australia/island combination? Does anyone know what the weather in Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef will be like in October?

Thanks so much!

The South Pacific is a wonderful destination for honeymooners! Weather will be great in October in both Australia and Tahiti. If you have some more time to travel I recommend two weeks in Australia and a week in Tahiti. There are some gorgeous islands off the coast of Queensland in Australia with white sand beaches and access to the Great Barrier Reef at your fingertips. These include Lizard Island, Hayman Island, Hamilton Island and Heron Island...just to name a few. You can fly into Sydney and enjoy the sights for a few days before flying north to the islands. Day trips from Sydney include the beautiful Blue Mountains (Australia's Grand Canyon) and Hunter Valley (a great wine region). French Polynesia is also a must-see! Fly into Papeete, Tahiti and then from there I recommend visiting Moorea which is a 30 minute ferry ride (or 10 minute flight), and then Bora Bora which is a 1 hour flight from there. Both islands offer stunning views and the color of the water is incredible. Stay in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora for an unforgettable experience! Contact Travelscene to speak with a South Pacific specialist - (866) 451-7502. They can customize a fantastic itinerary for your honeymoon from New York at a great value! Good luck and congratulations!

You should consider Fiji.  It is a particularly popular destination for honeymooners from Australia and New Zealand as well as for celebrities.  I'm just back from a visit and can suggest two resorts.

Yasawa Island Resort is in a relatively dry area, with a sandy beach.  You get there by a stupendous ride in an 8-seat plane that lands on a short grassy airstrip.  Very Banana Republic.  The bures (cabins) are large and luxurious and face the ocean, and you get your own private hammock and lounge chairs with thatched-roof, and the food is exceptional, including plenty of fresh seafood.  A very private honeymoon cottage is available.  http://www.yasawa.com

Paradise Taveuni on the other hand is a super place for divers and snorkelers, but there is plenty to do for everyone else, too.  Also reached by small plane (though a bit larger), once landed it is an adventuruou, scenic 1-hour drive through rainforest and coconut plantations and over a long stretch of unpaved (or “unsealed”) road.  Quite off the grid.  More modest, but still offering relatively luxurious creature comforts, it also has a honeymoon bure.  Bures are smaller than at Yasawa, but all have a view of the ocean.  And here, roosters crow at dawn and chickens run freely across the manicured lawns, and everyone gets a private outdoor shower and hot tub.  Oh, and the food here is also worth crowing about.  http://www.paradiseinfiji.com

You can keep an eye on who is offering what to Australia and Bora Bora at http://www.australiavacationguide.com/ or http://www.tahitivacationguide.com/. These two blogs post daily travel deals, honeymoon packages as well as hotel deals and cruises.

Australia & New Caledonia would be my suggestion for other islands destinations
