I'm beginning to plan a six week trip to Australia and New Zealand, spending approximately three weeks in each.  My rough itinerary includes the areas around Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns/Great Barrier Reef, and primarily the south island in NZ.  I'm striving for as much moderate weather as possible in these far-flung areas, and had thought that possibly November-December would be the best compromise.  But some friends have said NZ can be really cold then, and that I should go in February/March.  But it sounds like that's not a good time for Australia, especially Cairns.  Would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions to settle my quandry.  Thanks!

Australia is such a huge country (about same size as U.S.) that you’re going to get weather variations between north and south throughout the year.

Nov/Dec is not a good time to visit Cairns and the top half of the continent.  The “wet” will be in full swing and it will be extremely hot, humid and rainy.  In the southern half, temps will be approaching those of summer which can be quite hot as well, although Melbourne is usually the “coolest” of the 3 cities.

Feb/Mar (the end of the summer going into autumn) can still be quite warm to hot in the south (note the recent devastating bushfires).  Cairns is still in the “wet,” but if you can tolerate heat and humidity and are really keen on going, then I’d say go.  All places have air-con if you’re concerned.

N.Z.’s South Island won’t be “really cold” in Nov/Dec.  Because it gets more annual rain than the North Island, temps tend to be on the cool side.  As for Feb/Mar, the days can still be nice.  That said, the further south you travel (Mt. Cook region or Fjordland), the cooler it will be.  The key is to dress in layers and bring wet-weather gear.

December is high season Down Under so prices and airfares will reflect that.  And, you will want to reserve accommodations if you're there during the Christmas/New Year holidays.

Personally, I would pick Feb/Mar just to avoid the holiday crowds.

I'd say it a little differently to Jan and whereas November will already be warm with humidity rising in November and the possibility of spring storms further south, the wet season Cairns way is usually wetter from December and often January on and you could risk getting wettest in February/March.

NZ can still be cool, particularly the south island, wet and windy on west coast particularly where it is exposed to the southern ocean whereas the east coast has some protection by the alpine country that runs closer to west coast, the east coast having some plains country but I would not say it would be bitterly cold other than for windchill factor.

Jan describes Feb/Mar. well and they are generally the hottest months for Australia all over though temperatures can start to cool from mid March on depending on annual variations - the TC that has just meandered well offshore fortunately along the north/central Queensland coast for about a week has dropped temperatures quite significantly and a few days after the record Victorian temperatures of 47C there were early morning temperatures in single figures being reported and day temperatures back into mid twenties, a few weeks later and there were reports of snow at altitude.

It'll also make a difference as to whether you're going to do NZ first or last and I think doing it first offers a better option, ie. start in NZ in March and come over to Australia April and by mid April, the wet season will have abated up north but it'll still likely be warm and humid, all that moisture build up tending to make humidity hang about some more so than being there before the wet season.

That said I've known of people from Sydney finding it more than warm enough Cairns way as early as September and people from overseas also finding it a lot warmer than they expected about October/November, given that locals do play it down some - only because as locals they are used to it - a bit like if you live in a warmer climate and go somewhere cooler, you'll likely feel the cold more.

If you are going to do Australia first I would stick with November/December but be prepared to have a changeable pattern of weather for southern Australia can get some enormous spring storm weather just as NQ can get an earlier wet season start, and NZ is renowned for summers starting later and being shorter and so you could be getting some cooler wet weather there, but all up it'll likeably be more comfortable than a Feb/March stint, not overly cold anywhere and not too hot/humid either.

Thank you so much for your thoughts as to whether I should travel Nov/Dec or Feb/March.

As I'm trying to decide what to do, I want to pose a slightly different question.  I actually am totally flexible and can do this trip anytime.  So for the areas that I want to concentrate on, i.e., the southern cities and Cairns/Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the south island in New Zealand, which 6 weeks out of the whole year would you choose for the most moderate overall climate, and in which order would you do the countries, spending approximately 3 weeks in each?  I don't plan to come during crowded holiday times, and certainly know to expect varying weather, but just would like to aim for the most optimal time for both countries.

Many thanks for your input.

Well it probably depends a little on how well disposed you are to handling cooler weather and as you'd appreciate if a real granny colder weather can make it that you need a bit of mornings warming up, but being a northern hemisphere type you're probably accustomed to that.

I actually prefer the cooler weather a bit more when travelling for it is often more pleasurable being out and about than if it is too warm, and especially if you have humidity to go with it.

It is however something of a hard choice as there is quite a difference between NZ south island and NQ/GBR so I'll give two choices;

1. Australia first and start with GBR sometime towards end of October, getting warmer but mot overly hot then and humidity not so bad and southern parts will have plenty of spring colour and days with some warmth and minimal cooler days.

New Zealand by mid November will also be getting warmer and some good weather.

2. New Zealand first and about mid/late April, weather getting cooler but still not too bad and then over to southern part of Australia with reasonably moderate weather [~20C] and for both countries you should still get something of autumn [fall] colours and then on to NQ late May/early June and you should have missed any real wet weather, it stilling being about mid twenties as far as temps and humidity not too bad.

Of course there are always going to be yearly variations and some greater changes possible if we believe all we're told on global warming and I do not have any sort of a crystal ball.

So do you like all the spring flower blooming, open gardens and flower shows etc. being plentiful, Rhododendrons in the Dandenongs being a trreat - http://www.dandenong-ranges.net.au/http://www.visitvictoria.com/displayobject.cfm/objectid.000341F2-2C89-1EBF-BED880C476A90000/ , http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/1park_display.cfm?park=49 offering some insights and then you have http://www.royalshow.com.au/competitions.asp about last two weeks of September each year so you could come a bit earlier if that type of year interests and do the south first and then GBR and over to NZ.

And then with the Melbourne Cup Horse Race, world famous on first Tuesday in November, the spectacular roses all about the race course are possibly less talked of but do get plenty of local mention and there'll be open gardens about then too - http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/10/31/2406559.htm being typical.

Or is it crisper evening airs and the fall colours that attract?, one advantage at least of coming for fall downunder is that you would be returning back above the equator when it'll be warming rather than getting ready for snow if that is to be considered.

We were just in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, and Hobart for a total of five weeks this last December/January.

The weather was pleasantly warm with only a few hot days in all cities, except Carins.  Cairns has their rainy season during that time and there were storms a few of the days. Our last day, we had to leave for the airport early due to a storm that threatened to close off the roads with flooding.

You can read the whole trip report on my blog at www.budgetnomad.blogspot.com. It is searchable.

We went to Australia in Sept 2002 for a month, starting in Melbourne then to Adelaide, Alice Springs, Cairns and ending in Sydney.  I thought the weather was perfect.  Melbourne and Adelaide was cool yet comfortable, Alice Springs and Cairns - HOT and Sydney cool and comfortable.  By cool and comfortable, I wore sweater sets and a fleece unlined jacket.  But in the hot regions it was shorts, sandals and bathing suits.

Unfortunately we did not go to New Zealand (my one regret) so can not speak for that area during this time.  But I can say my husband and I both really enjoyed our time in Australia, and for us, that time of year was perfect.

Have a great time whenever you decide to go!

We traveled to Australia and new Zealand in Sept. 2004 and thought we had the perfect weather. We started on Sept. 21, going first to Cains, Sydney, Alice Springs, Melbourne, and then to New Zealand. We were gone 23 days. We were in a group of varying ages, from retired to those in their 40's using Goahead Tours. We all felt we got good value for our money. New Zealand was still into sweater-jacket weather. We loved the trip and would go again in a minute!! New Zealand was serious about their rules of bringing fruit into the country as one couple each had an apple in their carry on and they were fined $200. That was for one apple. They let them by on the second. They had declared no fruit!!!!

We spent 5 weeks in AU/NZ in 2006, starting in mid-September in Melbourne (lovely weather, light jacket in the evening), then Sydney (nice but on the day we spent going on eco-tour to Blue Mtns it was rainy), then Cairns (warm enough to enjoy the pool), then a cruise on the reef (lovely weather, good snorkeling, and the jellyfish weren't there yet).  Then we covered the south island of NZ, where the weather was quite pleasant, a little rain, jacket in the evening, and ended up in the north island, a little rain but very nice.  If you plan to snorkle the reef, try to get there before the jellyfish.  This is spring down under and the flowers were beautiful, and the birds and animals very active.  Whenever you go, it is going to be a treat!

I have travelled in Australia and NZ in their winter and spring, July through November and found the weather moderate by North American standards. My daughter lived in Canberra and travelled around the country for two years. You want to avoid Australia's brutally hot summers and attendent droughts and fires in the southern areas and rain and humidity in the North. If you go in the winter months Sydney, Melbourne, and the southern and western areas will be comfortable and Cairns and the GBR will be pleasant and warm and the "stingers," poisonous jelly fish, won't be a problem. I would save New Zealand for the end of the trip as spring comes later there, i.e. October/November. Look in a good travel book, Frommer or Lonely Planet, paying attention to the climate charts they give you. patblakes

I've been to Australia and New Zealand in late Oct/early Nov. and in Australia in April and had moderate weather both trips.

Times of least amount of rainy weather, moderate temperatures, and avoiding school holidays :

New Zealand  Mid-January through April  then Sept thru mid-Dec.

Australia - South Central (Adelaide)  Mid-January thru April then Oct to mid-Dec.

Australia - Southeast (Sydney)  Mid-January thru February then August thru Mid-December

Australia -  Northern (Cairns)  April and May  then July thru October

When you get into your research, you will see that New Zealand and Australia each demand a good deal of time.  Also, they are farther apart in flying hours than you might think.

Not sure that I would try to see both countries in one trip, but, if that is the time that you have, than go for it.

Study the Suggested Itineraries sections at the front of the Lonely Planet guides.  That will give you a feel for priorities.

Well, all looked to be going reasonably well there Gran with a general consensus it seems on making your trip either late spring/spring-summer or late summer-autumn/autumn.

Until we get colourful and I'm not too sure where the nature's moderate temperatures came from for temperatures mid January on in south of Australia will be approaching peaks.

Cairns in April will still be warm and humid, even possibility still of tropical rain/storms and May/june right through to October is about best time, no gap to exclude June needed.

Seotember on South Island of NZ will still be somewhat wintery.

Great Barier Reef best October or November, December also usually great time also though early monsoon may happen. usually late in that month though. The monsoon Jan to March, the drizzle rain April. the trade winds May to September.

Anyone knows anything about the balloon festival? Last time I went I remember I loved it so much and this time as im going there again, I dont remember when it was. I might go and have a look at it again. I'm traveling around the world for half of a year now and it has been great fun with http://www.cheapairlines.com and wow I got a chance to learn so many things and I am very thankful that I left home!! Otherwise I would still be at home!!! I think NZ is one of the best places I have been so far. I'm heading there again in a few weeks, any suggestions where I should go? I heard about the quake in Christchurch!! Should I still go therE??????

WE have a slight diff "problem". Time is not an issue with us. We have travelled the whole US in an RV in 2 years and now wish to do the same(ish) in OZ and NZ, so we are caravan/RV OK. It seems sensible to stay down there, whilst we are there , for as long as we can, rather than fly to and from Europe twice! An idea we have is spring/early summer in the NE of OZ, (after buying a caravan and tow car). Then zip over to NZ for ???? 2 months??? buy a car and tour. Flog it at Auckland and back to pick up the Caravan/car and tour OZ for a further 3/4/5 months. We would very much appreciatte your thoughts.  We are mid 50's and I believe that a 6 month visa is the most we can get.

Are you thinking of something like this: "...spring/early summer..." which is Oct-Nov in QLD (that is the "...NE of OZ..."), Dec-Jan in NZ, Feb-Mar-April-May in NSW and VIC, SA, WA and NT? Don't forget Tasmania, although it is not unlike NZ in many ways.

That would take all the months you list and then some. but you are not bound by a 6-month limit as I understand the bureaucrats:

Read this at the official Aussie visa site www.immi.gov.au/visitors/tourist/visa-options.htm :

Tourist visa (Subclass 676)
A temporary visa allowing a stay in Australia of up to three or six or 12 months. Applicants can apply from both outside and in Australia. Some tourists are eligible to lodge an online application for an e676 Tourist visa
.

I'm quoting the key sentence:

"What does this visa let me do? If granted, this visa will allow you either a single or multiple entry to Australia for a stay period of up to three, six or 12 months. The period of stay and number of entries granted will depend on the purpose of the visit and your personal circumstances."

Seems to me that you should consider supplying a somewhat detailed plan with your visa application, one that makes sense and shows your serious intent - maybe you'll be asked to supply evidence of your ability to sustain yourselves for that long without having to look for work. Get ready to submit quotes or substantiated estimates for the purchases you intend to make (camper + vehicle), an itinerary, also list the ties you have in your home country (to show that you're not selling and packing up with the secret intent of staying in Australia
illegally ) - the sort of thing that shows that you know what you're up against and have realistic intentions.

Give it a shot, and good luck
!

Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere and hence the winter lasts from May to August while November to March are summer months. Queensland too is at its best in the winter months (May to October). New South Wales holds out its charming allure through out the year. Victoria is best visited between November and April though a tourist to Melbourne may be left puzzled due to the erratic and daily variation in the weather. Outback Australia is a dry desert region where temperatures reach extremes during the summer and winter seasons.

We are spending a month next Oct (although are fairly flexible, could go end Sept or into Nov a bit) we are going to Perth, Cairns, Sydney and NZ for a few days (North Island). Also where is best for a quickie couple of days stopover each way? What way round is best, where is weather going to be better generally? Has anyone done similar? We have family in Perth, but want to see the East coast too. Any advice gratefully received. Ta Laughing
