British Columbia: Sea Kayak Recommendations
We would like your suggestions for a sea kayak company. We're looking for a 4-day trip in early July. We will be traveling with our 16-year-old son. We are not experienced kayakers. Thank you.

Where would you be starting your trip? or at least what is your destination point in BC?

We'll be spending a few days in Vancouver visiting family, but then are open to a starting point for kayaking. I figured Port McNeil would be where the kayak trip would begin.

We did a great tour a few years back with Northern Lights, but their website shows them on an indefinite hiatus..we get e-mails from seakayakadventures.com, tours seem similar to the wilderness kayaking trip we did out of Port McNeil, check them out. Just be careful when you do your research, some other tours advertised the Johnstone Strait for the orcas, but their trips leave out of the Campbell River, making it a longer boat ride to your destination.
We were not experienced kayakers then either, but after that trip, you"ll want to kayak on future vacations. It is a magical part of the world! Humpbacks, orcas, seals in the water, bald eagles in the trees, lots of sea birds, we still talk of going back!

My adult daughter and I booked a 5-day trip in July 2008 with Out For Adventure Wilderness Tours Ltd.  It was a base camp trip which I recommend for beginners as you don't have to take down and set up camp each day.  We departed from Campbell River by water taxi to our camp near Robson Bight Ecological Preserve.  I note from their website that they are doing 3-day base camp trips now.  Check out their website at http://www.outforadventure.com/

I highly recommend this company; registration was thorough and efficient, the guides were knowledgable, committed and personable; the food was amazing (including fresh fruit and vegetables and of course salmon), and the scenery was spectacular.  In addition to the orcas, we also saw dolphins, a humpback whale, bald eagles and brown bears.  It was a memorable trip!
