I am looking for a place to spend a week with my family.  I have 2 kids ages 16 and 13.  We like:
  • Nice beaches
  • Good snorkeling
  • Lots of wildlife- iguanas, monkeys, turtles, etc.
  • Availability of excursions to see unique and interesting things
  • A different culture

We have gone to Riviera Maya in Mexico numerous times and loved it but we want to venture out and try some place new.  We are sending a list to our travel agent so they can try and find a place in our price range.  We have Costa Rica and Belize on the list but right now they are not working out.  Any suggestions for islands in the Caribbean?

St. Kitts and Grenada both have monkeys.

I never saw as many lizards/iguanas as I saw on Bonaire a couple of weeks ago.  There's also wild donkeys and flamingoes.  Not much for great beaches, although the one at Lac Bay was lovely.  Really awesome walk in snorkeling.

You might also look at Panama.  We saw lots of monkeys and sloths.  We were also fortunate enough to get a very good sighting of a jaguarundi.  Take a trip to the San Blas islands for a glimpse of a completely different culture.  When we were there a few years ago, on some of the islands, you actually had to get permission from the chief before you could stay....Fascinating.

Trinidad has a lot of wildlife, including monkeys. It is one of the best places in the world to see giant turtles (who lay their eggs there every year) and also the scarlet ibis. The sight of them nesting at sunset in the green mangrove is really amazing. Bird watching in general is great there as well. The caves with bats are also very interesting to see. There are a lot of medium sized mammals there, such as armadillos and possums, plus a lot of iguanas.

But in general the tourist sector is not very well organised, because the island has an oil and gas based economy. There are some very good eco-tourism companies, however. But the beaches in Trinidad aren't that great. Its sister island, Tobago, however, has very nice beaches and is more tourist-oriented, cleaner, etc.
