Please help us choose an island and even a hotel/resort! So confused....

I would appreciate any suggestions you can offer. My husband and I would like to take our 2 boys ages 6&4 on a vacation this summer. We chose the caribbean since it's a close flight from the U.S.

Please help us choose an island and even a hotel/resort! So confused....

I would appreciate any suggestions you can offer. My husband and I would like to take our 2 boys ages 6&4 on a vacation this summer. We chose the caribbean since it's a close flight from the U.S. and we want the beach. Been to Costa Rica and Playa del Carmen. Here is kind of what we are hoping for:
- beautiful, swimmable beaches for the boys. We are from the 'Emerald Coast' in Florida, so it's going to take a beautiful beach to impress us. We want to find that beach.
-we want somewhere that lush and tropical if possible
-we want an island that is SAFE for us to explore restaurants and shops. We like to venture out of the hotel/resort and visit the locals and experience the food. We don't plan to be out at night and I realize that there is crime everywhere in the world, but I don't want to worry about being mugged on the streets, hassled, or have my room broken into.
-we were hoping for an all-inclusive if it's a pretty expensive island. If it's an affordable island to eat at or grocery shop at, then AI not necessary
We are considering Puerto Rico (not sure which beach is best), Grand Cayman, St. John. I also saw some rental villas in Jamaica that looked promising, but I don't know how safe Jamaica is outside of the resorts. Roaton sounds amazing but I have heard it can be dangerous. Am I missing any islands that might fit the bill? Turks & Caicos sounds amazing seems VERY expensive outside of the resort.

Despite it's 'bad' press, I'd take a good look at Negril, Jamaica. Really nice beach. We don't stay at resorts, but, Breezes looked like a nice family resort when we were there in the fall of 2010.

We walked the entire length of 7 mile beach several times while there. Never felt unsafe. Although people will offer to sell you drugs. A simple 'no thanks' will send them on their way.

It's a beautiful island. Lots to see and do. Not my favorite, but, my needs and wants are different than yours......

Look at Aruba, Grand Cayman, Roatan, Bahamas.

You would probably prefer a Canadian Atlantic coast beach or Outer banks, or Florida beaches.
