My wife and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary this June, and we're considering a trip to Turks. We know little about the island, so I'm hoping to gather information from those who have been there.
Where is the best place to stay? Are these hotels or condos? We like the idea of a condo, and don't really care for big hotels.
Is it hard to get around the island? We'd rather not rent a car, and don't mind walking.
First of all, congatulations for 30 years of marriage -- hope my wife and I make it that long. :-)
Based on your post, it sounds like the Turks and Caicos are tailor-made for you.
Providenciales is the most visited island, and has the largest selection of resorts, hotels, villas, restaurants, shops, etc. However, it's not overly developed like many Caribbean destinations. Grace Bay is the big attraction, possibly one of the prettiest stretches of beach in the tropics.
Resort accommodations range from nice to luxurious. Honestly, there's not a bad choice, and we've personally stayed at eight of them over the years -- visited them all.
Most resorts along Grace Bay offer condo-style accommodations. Most have modern appliances, furnishings, and amenities.
With the possible exception of Beaches Resort, there are no "big" hotels in the Turks and Caicos. In other words, there's no need to hop a shuttle from your room, just to go back and forth to the beach -- not even at Beaches. :-)
Take a look at Villa Renaissance and Regent Grand. Both of these resorts are very nice, centrally located, and more self-catering. There are lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance, so either might be a good fit for you.
There are also lots of other resorts that also make nice anniversary choices -- Grace Bay Club, Seven Stars, Point Grace, The Somerset, Regent Palms, Windsong, the list goes on and on.
Here are some links that have been helpful with our planning...
Sorry, I tried to reply to your post earlier today, but I must have accidentally deleted it while editing... I'll try again. ;-)
Congratulations for 30 years of marriage. :-)
Wife, family, and I have visited numerous times during June, and also celebrated our 20th anniversary in the Turks and Caicos during May 2001. June is a terrific time to visit, Resort prices are often 40% less than peak season, which works well for us. :-)
Not sure if this is your first visit to the Turks and Caicos, so first, you should know that Prividenciales (Grace Bay) is the major "hub" for tourism. However, that doesn't mean it's an overcrowded "touristy" destination, like more "popular" resort islands. The vast majority of accommodations are condo-style resorts. There are also numerous privately owned villas available.
Honestly, there's not a bad resort choice along Grace Bay. We've stayed at eight of them, and visited them all. That said, it sounds like either Regent Grand or Villa Renaissance could possibly be good choices for what you're seeking. Both are very nice, centrally located, with very nice amenities. They both have restaurants and shops within easy walking distance, but not on property.
Other very nice "anniversary" resorts might include Grace Bay Club, Point Grace, Seven Stars, The Somerset, Regent Palms, Windsong, etc.
