In the Frommer's safety section it warns about spiders in Belize. Do I really need to be concerned about spiders? Are they that common?

I haven't seen that many spiders in Belize in my dozen or so trips. That said, I spend most of my time on Ambergris. Last time I was at the Mayan ruins at Lamanai a lady in our group had a good sized tarantula climb over her foot. Scared her half to death. Didn't hurt her though. Fortunately for the spider, she jumped clear and didn't stomp in him.

I think you have to be realistic: it's the tropics. There are bugs. There are more on the mainland than out on the cayes, but still ... bugs and spiders are just part of the tropical deal.

Fortunately, few of the spiders are aggressive. Tarantulas, especially, will try to hide or run away from you, they don't chase you.

The best advice for tropical travel is to use common sense: knock out your shoes before you put them on, and don't stick your hands or feet into dark places where you can't see (like under the bed or in the back of a drawer).

And if you do get bitten? Use Preparation-H to shrink mosquito or sand flea bites, apply Neosporin if any bite gets infected, and keep your vitamin C intake high. (Margaritas are medicinal!)

I've lived in Belize for 18 months. The first spider I saw looked like it was chome plated. Really beautiful, forget what it was but I was assured it was harmless. The second spider I've seen is tonight, which is why I found this, because I'm trying to identify it. It looks like one of those big spiders you get in the bath, only bigger.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is of all the places I've lived or visited, I've never seen so few spiders as here in Belize!
