I am looking to take a family trip in December with our 3 teenagers (2 boys are 18 and 19, and a girl is 15). We have approximately 10 days.  I am thinking partly beach time, and partly activities: ziplining, hiking, rafting etc. We would like to base ourselves in 1 or 2 places and not move around every 2 days.  Perhaps all-inclusives, perhaps not.

Are we better off booking a complete package with a tour company, or booking everything separate? This will be the first trip to Costa Rica for all of us. Need advice and suggestions to get started!

Do the zipline in Monteverde, and no other.  It's fabulous.

Your choice will depend on the sense of adventure you have. If you prefer to have freedom, schedule your own time and make your own choices, it would be better to plan your vacation by yourself. However, if you are more into a complete itinerary and support during your stay a complete package with a tour company will fit you better. Both options have it ups and downs.
10 days and two destinations is most popular choice among tourists visiting CR. For first timers Arenal, Manuel Antonio and Monteverde are the main destinations. You can find lots of activities, tours and hotel options in all of them. Arenal can fit your preferences if you enjoy adventure tours, hot springs and volcano views (currently the volcano is dormant). Manuel Antonio can be your beach destination, lots of wildlife, activities and the national park, beautiful beaches inside the park. Monteverde is more for nature lovers, cloud forest and biodiversity are the main attraction, also you have the chance lots of adventure activities, really good zip lines as sherrybaby mentioned.
Many other destinations are available in Costa Rica, so you have plenty of options! Here are some websites that can help you a little:
visitcostarica.com (official tourist CR board website)
arenal.net (arenal info)
valledoradotours.cr (general CR info / good tour company)
puretrek.com (nice canyoning tour in Arenal)
elements-travel.com (tailor made vacation packages)
yourtravelmap.com (map and distances)
Hope this helps!

if we do the trip on our own without a tour company, is it safe and easy to drive from place to place?
