We plan to be in Prague in August 2011. Any suggestion for Classical Music Concert for us? We particularly like chamber music, but are open for other suggestions. Thanks, Eric

That could be tough, it is so not the concert season. Did you see the post from a few minutes ago about the hotel Aria in Prague that is classical-music themed, with a concierge who has a degree in musicology and knows all about the musical goings-on in town?

There are lots of Tourist concerts on in various places in the city usually themed round Mozart or Dvorak and you will see flier or them in the tourist offices in hotels, and will be given them in the street.I have been to a couple of the years in The Municiple House (Obnici Dum),the Estates theatre and St Georges Crypt, quality varied but nothing to bad though the show (exerts of Mozart) at the Estates was a comlete rip -off,cost 1250Czk for an hour long show with 4 musicians and 2 singers, compared to the previous year we went to a full Opera there and had box seats for under 1000Czk. http://www.bohemiaticket.cz/WBS/ang/ look at this wesite for a programme of whats on .
gus named it - "...Tourist concerts..." If you don't mind clicking cameras, people coming and going during the playing, silly costumes and fake Mozart-era wigs then you'll get to hear music, even sometimes, as gus said, "not too bad"... Be thankful for small mercies. Overall, if you're a real classical music person and regular concert goer, lower your expectations a lot. Not in Prague but in Vienna, the worst such experience I had was a "Mozart" concert at - no less - the Musikverein! Snippets, excerpts of all kinds of Mozart pieces, just the portions of the best-known movements, performed in a robotic manner in silly costumes while people came and went and talked and videographed and iPhoned and what have you - just atrocious, and not cheap either. Had similar experiences in the popular opera in Prague, a "folk opera" with a choreography that was indescribably stiff, mediocre singing of folkish ditties, it made your average high-school production look like Broadway.
So, in August when the classical musicians are on hiatus except for festivals, attend any musical event with a huge lump of salt...
Wally and Gus, thanks for the info. I have heard about Hotel Aria (probably from TripAdvisor). Since this is our first trip to Prague, your input is very useful and I feel that I now know what to expect. It seems that we can go for a Mozart opera at least. Thanks, Eric
The Mozart Opera at the Estates was a wonderful experience , full opera (Don Giovanni) in the hteatre it was fisrt preformed,it is a lovely place and a great experience.
