Check out www.inyourpocket.com for ideas. Tallinn has one of the most gorgeous "Old Towns" of any place in Europe. It's also small enough so you can get a good idea of it, even if you only have one day to explore it.
Frommers magazine had an article on Tallinn at some point last year.
What information is there about travel TO Tallin, and what are the accomodations like? How is the communication? Is there any problem for non-Estonian speaking persons? Many of the trips I have looked into only have a few hours to spend there, but I would like to spend a few days to see where my father was born and grew up. To the best of my knowledge, I do not have any relatives living there.
Sorry this is a late post - I hope you did not give up on your trip to Tallinn. It is a very beautiful city - language should not be a problem. I was sitting at a bus stop and, forgetting I was in a nonEnglish speaking country, complimented a young girl. She answered me in perfect English, even using the slang of our teenagers. Tallinn has many fine hotels and restaurants. We stayed at the Viru for its location, near the beautiful old town. The Viru is a typical large hotel. There are several others -- after two weeks of traveling around Estonia I would feel comfortable in saying you would be well received and the accommodations would be clean.
Here is a suggestion for a guided walk: Visit Old Town, including Toompea Castle, the Russian Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevsky, the Holy Ghost Church, the Gothic Town Hall, and the partly ruined historic Dominican Monastery, where you'll hear a concert of medieval music before a final walk. Time is allowed for shopping in shops and from local vendors.
We were on the Marco Polo and in Tallin just did the ship's walking tour. Walked through the old city and saw a folk dance show, very beautiful church. Tallin was so clean and not what we expected we really enjoyed the tour. The ship did have a shuttle into town if you just wanted to do your own thing.
We are going on the Princess Cruise and will be in Tillinn for for about 5 hours. I am most interested in the walking tour you suggested and also the shuttle into town. If the tour is worth it, I think I would be interested. I do not like to be herded. What about any of the other tours offered on the cruise? Did you take any of them? Would you recommend them? There are going to be 16 of us and we certainly will split up at different places , but are interested in renting a van with a driver in Berlin, and St. mPeterburgh...any comments? Thank you. djl
My husband and I will be taking a cruise and will have only one day to spend in Tallinn. (9 a.m. - 6 p.m.) What is the best way to see it? Thanks, sandra gordon
We're taking 3 weeks to see Scandinavia with 2 full days in St. Petersburg. Now I'm also thinking of trying to see Tallin and/or Helsinki. Is one more worth seeing than the other, or are they both worth the extra couple of days? Please advise
