For lunch, I"d recommend the Hell Hunt Pub. They claim to be the oldeseldestin Tallin and you can sit up in the front bar section or in the back where the seating is more cafe style. We had soup and salads that were both very good. They serve Russian beers if you'd like to have a try at it. I don't remember the price, but it was reasonable.

We also skipped lunch one day and headed straight for dessert at the cozy Chocolnterie Cafe. It is an intimate antique filled place done in a 1920-1930 style. Can't beat the chocolate creations and the good coffee. There's a gramophone plyaing old music to add to the atmosphere.

We "did" the tourist dining at both Old Hansa and Troika.

Old Hansa is medieval, and one of many such places to dine in town. The building is authentic to the period and the menu was well researched(explains their choices). We were told by locals that it was better for the music performance which we thought was really well done. The food was good... we had the interesting combinations of wild foods such as boar, elk, and rabbit served with homemade honey beer, spiced wine, and warm grainy bread. They have other foods for the less adventurous. Price was $809EEK/$60Us. I'd recommend it for the experience.

Troika is across is in the central plaza and is a Russian place. Eat downstairs ( more quaint with arched medieval stone walls painted in Russian floral design) and arrive about 8pm for the music and dancing. They sure take pickle dining to new heights (pickles dipped in Honey? Try it!)! Try the classic salted herring served with boiled potato, hardboiled egg, onions and sour cream for the appetizer. Guess it's very classic.
The bar is stocked with Russian Vodkas to go with it. Hubby had a beef rollup with cheese in the center and I had the sauerbraten that is not German style at all. We both would go back to try the sizzling steaks that were coming out of the kitchen. The show was really well done with classic Russian singing accompanied by an accordian and folkdancing done by young beautiful local ballet dancers. I didn't write down the bill for the evening, but guess it was around $50-60US.

By far, our favorite place was "Silk" for excellent Suishi. It's a more jazzy place, designed like a club with techno type music. reservations are essential at the 7-8pm dining hours. (Don't bother, btw, with the other suishi place in town...it's horrible!) Price was $850EEK.
for two.

I second the above post in the recommendation for Old Hansa ( http://www.oldehansa.com ). It's touristy, but very atmospheric and fun to eat out of earthen bowl and plates (their bathrooms are really neat too!). In a similar vein, the Peppersack ( http://www.peppersack.ee )is great, but I'd recommend picking it or Old Hansa, since they are very similar. For something a little more upscale, try Controvento ( http://www.controvento.ee ), probably one of the best restaurants in Tallinn (at least the best Italian); reservations are highly recommended, but they have a casual dining area downstairs as well, if you don't feel like getting out of your jeans. More info is also available here: http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/fpage/goodtime/dining_wining/restaurants
