Two ladies "of a certain age" are planning a sept trip to the Baltics
Two ladies "of a certain age" are planning a sept trip to the Baltics. We would prefer a guided tour but one that doesn't have us spend the whole day on the tour bus. We are modest in our needs for lodging and both are very fit as we work out regularly. Would appreciate any tips. We would probably do best with an air inclusive tour, and are aware that living in the Los Angeles area would probably raise the price of a tour considerably. Thanks for any suggestions. Wendy Jenkins
The first place would be check on back issues of Conde Nast Traveler. Recently there was an excellent article on the Baltics. They listed excellent sources. There are a few companies that do prepackaged tours to the Baltic Republics, I would recommend contacting an agency for some guidance. But be prepared with dates and cities and activities you are interested in.
Check with Travel Concepts International http://www.tci-travel.com/ They have a trip leaving in Sep. that looks great.
We went to South America with them, and would go anywhere they offer! Gwen puts together small groups, with lots of activity that members can tailor to their ability and/or interest. Our group of 12 included single women traveling together, as well as couples and individuals of both sexes. Age range was from 30 to 80, but we were all very compatible.
I suggest you check out Paul Laifer Tours (www.laifertours.com) for the best deals in Eastern European travel. They make land and air arrangements and provide half day city tours, but then you are on your own. There are choices in hotels too which can bring the cost down, but they are always centrally located.
I've had experience traveling with Gate 1 on their escorted tours. They are more geared towards travellers looking for a structured, no hassle vacation. www.gate1travel.com Good Luck!
You might want to check out the trips offered by Grand Circle Travel -- see http://www.gct.com/gcc/general/default.aspx?oid=8557 for a list of all the European (East and West) trips they are offering. GCT caters to travellers 55 and older, and offers air-inclusive trips at rates we have consistently found to be an excellent value. We have travelled with them 5-6 times (as well as with their sister company, Overseas Adventure Travel) and can recommend them without any qualms. Good luck, and enjoy your travels!
Try Go Ahead Vacations....used them twice, Hotels they use are locatd downtown as compared to some others and have optional side trips as well as free time for yourself. They dont keep you on the bus all day long either
You might try a trip called "The Glorious Baltics". It is produced by FIVE STAR TOURING. Call 1-800-792-7827 for 212-818-9140. This company "Five Star Touring" is a great tour operator/independent & escorted tour company. Travel with small groups.
I just returned from touring Eastern Europe including the Baltic's, Russia and Finland on Sunday. I did the research on the internet and planned as we traveled. We flew to Warsaw and traveled by train or bus to the cities by night, touring by day each of the cities we visited. We moved fairly quickly covering, Kaunas, Vilnius, Trakai, Moscow, St. Pete, Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga and back to Warsaw in 9 days. It was a wonderful cultural experience. We purchased exit travel tickets when we arrived at the station or utilized the hotel concierge desks when English was a problem.
Many thanks, To all who have offered suggestions, I will follow up on the information you provide.I will also check with my friends to see if we are in agreement in regard to dates, duration of trip etc. W
I go to Lithuania every year, good airport in Vilnius, taxi about $7 to downtown. Litinterp B&B excellent value, they are on internet. Buy "In Your Pocket" guides, and you will know everything. Buses to anywhere comfortable and cheap. Very safe, but I don't go out late at night by myself. Food very heavy and fatty, but cheap, although that is changing as country becomes more "european". Go and enjoy!
I am intrigued by your Eastern European adventure since I want to visit extended family again in Lithuania but I would also like to visit Russia. What were the visa requirements for Russia. . .or any of the other countries? What about the trains and the lodging facilities in Russia?
Last September my husband & I took a cruise of the Baltic on Oceania. Although we travel alot throughout the world, this cruise (we highly recommend a room with a veranda) was truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Absolutely fantastic. Please see if it works for your budget as it cannot be beat! Please email me if you need additional information. FYI, we have no interest in travel agencies/cruises/whatever. Just a truly great experience.
