My husband and I will be going to Paris and want to visit another region for 4 nights. We were thinking of Lyon, but now my husband was thinking first of Avignon, but then changed his mind to Strasbourg. We will be taking public transportation (train from Paris to Strasbourg, and then buses and walking in Strasbourg). We did Bayeux last year and loved it. A very relaxing 3 days with a side trip to Normandy and Caen (glad we stayed in Bayeux and not Caen). Has anyone been to Strasbourg, and is it charming? Any hotel recommendations that are moderately priced and the rooms are acceptable (I didn't care for our room on one of our vacations, but the breakfast was great)?
Thanks.
P.S. My husband thought we could go to Switzerland from Strasbourg too. Is that easy to do?
I can't say whether 3 days is too much...I've never been there for more than two at a time. But I doubt it. It's not only a "charming" town with many restaurants, churches and other attractions, it has a special buzz as (at least one of) the "capital of Europe," as well as beng a university town. Because of its position on the border, the range of short trips is immense.
OK, so first question first. 3 nights in Strasbourg is wonderful! Too many people will just breeze through it from a tour bus and not truly enjoy this wonderful city...
You can spend 3 days days just strolling along the rivers of the 'old city' area of Petite France out to Notre Dame Cathedral.
I think I spent almost 2 days exploring the "Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg" (Notre Dame) and the surrounding streets...
There are many hotels in the main area, but in reality only one.
Hotel Beacour. There really is nothing to compare to it in the main tourist zone. It is a Lovely hotel and each room (I have been in) has a Jacuzzi Tub... This is a really nice touch and a rare thing in Euro Hotels no matter where you are.
This is truly a beautiful hotel, charming and unique. It is so close to all the main attractions and the staff is wonfderful. Remember you are in France and not the USA, since you obviously understand already from your post and you will Love this hotel as much as I do...
I personally use Agoda for bookings, they will give the best price available from a variety of sources. I am booked for 8 days from now! I am so excited to go back! I got a fantastic rate of US $68/night, but this is rare. It changes pretty much every time, but look at your favorite travel site and see what you can get...
Winter is a special time in Strasbourg. The Tourism after Christmas is down from the normal craziness and there is so much to see here.
Restaraunts: It is endless... I try a different one each time. There must be over 200 in the downtown area alone.
Memorable ones:
Le Tire Bouchon- I thought this was the "Best of the Best" The cuisine was just unbelievable. Atmosphere was simply beautiful. Wine selection wonderful... There was a 'true Parisian' with me on this trip and they said "it was okay" (a rave by Parisian standards!!) so I guess it must be good... :)
La Nouvelle Poste- I have eaten here twice. Both times were exceptional.
L'Alsace à Table- This is the place if you like fish.
Start at Petite France and just walk the streets along the river. Go through the Notre Dame and head north... Every side street has a cafe or 2 or 5 that you can sit at.
There are some lovely Museums as well. The Rohan Palace is lovely.
Enjoy Strasbourg!
I almost forgot... Yes, if you want to take the train down to Zurich or Lucerne it is very easy... 2nd class is around $65 and leave about every 30 minutes throughout the day. Rush Hours are slightly more, but I like to travel off-peak anyway...
Thanks for all of your information. Yes, we like to spend more time in each location so that it's more relaxing. We visit France often, so we don't have to see everything all at once. I checked out the lovely hotel you recommended, but it's a little more than we wanted to pay. Plus, we really don't need a jacuzzi tub. Do you have a second recommendation? I was looking at Hotel Gutenberg, but the furnishings look very "mod" and uncomfortable. I also was looking at Hotel Cardinal du Rohan, but that was acceptable for price of smallest room, but the bigger room was more than we wanted to pay. I find their websites confusing as far as booking/information though, even with translating the page to english! Advice?
Have fun on your trip. I'm sure you're getting excited!!!
I'm sure you are looking for personal recommendations, but if you want to do a search, venere.com and booking.com are good sites with lots of reviews of the hotels, and you can search by price so you're looking at hotels in the range you want to pay.
I would like suggestions of how to spend 9 days leaving from Paris & ending in Strasbourg. Reims & the Colmar areas are on my list but I need help with timing + suggestions of what else to see & do . We like history, quaint villages & wine. Hotel suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thank you.
I was in Strasbourg for 4 days and stayed in Hotel de l'Europe which I highly recommend. It was in the Petite France area on a pedestrian street (but taxis were allowed to deliver you from the station), and walkable to everything, but not as hectic as right in front of the cathedral which I would not have liked myself, having seen it. It was moderately priced but very nice and the rooms were huge. Very good breakfast room, also, even though I don't usually eat at the hotel, but in this area, that worked out. I walked to and from the train station one day as I did a day trip to Nancy (which was great). So it is definitely close enough to walk, but I took a taxi when I had my bags.
I finally settled on the Best Western Hotel de l'Europe before I saw your post. I was having difficulty though getting the actual hotel website so I could book with them and not go thru anyone else. Also I was having difficulty trying to find their cancellation policy. Is www.hotel-europe.com the only way to book this hotel? No direct hotel website? I've been looking all over the net for several hours!! Thanks.

That is the official website. For English, click the American flag, then click on the website's picture, and all the details for the hotel, including reservations, will pop-up.
If you have pop-up blocker on your PC, you need to click that to unblock.
That is their website, not sure why you don't think it is.
Cancellation terms are available for reading when you try to make a reservation and it depends on the kind of rate you choose. Therre are some that are nonrefundable with discounts, for example. Regular rates have a 48 hr cancellation policy, you have to cancel by the link they send you in the email when you reserve. The website explains that when you try to book, you have to click on the terms to read them.
