My fiance and I are traveling to Paris on the 17th of this month and are looking to spend a the 1st weekend in Paris the either rent a car or take a train to Caen or Bayeux and rent a car to travel to Normandy.  We will hope to check out cinder mills, local towns and the landing beaches for a few days and return to Paris on Thursday.  Our flight will leave on Sunday the 26 and we will have a 18 hour layover in Amsterdam.

Is it better to rent a car in Paris and drive out or take the train out then rent a car.

Where should we visit/stay on our travels outside of the city?

Thank you - Arone

There is a direct Intercity train from Paris to Bayeux. It takes 2 h 1/2. Bayeux is a good central point to visit Normandy.
By Car, it takes 3h 1/4h. So I suggest to take the train.

Be carefull, weather is very cold now in northen France. This week we have snow and negative temperatures... and the roads are frozzen.
So Train is safer than car.

Thank you for the advice.

Do you know by any chance, if we would be able to travel the route de cidre or visiting some of the chesse towns during the off season?

I am also interested in doing Normandy, Can you advise best hotel to stay in Bayeux and also I cannot pick my car up from Calais at the ferry as we are arriving on a Sunday.  How far is it from the ferry to Calais cbd.  Is it easy to get a taxi and where do you recommend to stay the first night as we will not be able to get the car until after 2pm.  We do not want to travel too far that night.

Here a good hotel in Bayeux.
http://hotel-churchill.fr/

In Bayeux, dont miss La tapisserie de la reine Mathilde.
Listed as a “Memory of the World” by UNESCO, the Bayeux Tapestry (Calvados) is an embroidery, 70 metres long, made in the 11th century. Celebrating the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, this linen canvas was probably embroidered by monks in the south of England after the Battle of Hastings on October 14th, 1066.
Legendary animals, ships, Vikings, Norman and Saxon cavalries illustrate the exploits of William and his opponent Harold, another pretender to the throne of England

Calais city center is around 1km from Ferry. But Calais is not a very nice city. Do no stop on this city.
