Anyone have suggestion for best tablet to use when traveling? Prefer not to haul around my laptop but want to be able to utilize wi-fi hot spots to Skype, watch movies & GPS. Prefer to keep it under $300 if possible. Saw some articles about some no name one's that have a ton of bells & whistles but not sure if they will work when traveling abroad (London or around Ireland). Any input much appreciated.
Your real preference ... if you like it at home, there will be no real difference on the road (wifi should be the same). The charging mechanism should be dual-voltage (most rechargeable devices are nowdays but double-check), decide if you want only wifi connect or addition of 3g/4g (works better in less crowded areas ... requires a data plan). Nothing magic here as even some eBook readers can surf the net. If you want more than websurfing (eg, other applications) you will need to do more research. I use the iPad2 and it is great (although more costly) and has an advantage of being application compatible (meaning, no additional cost) with my iPhone. Even my iPhone will do the job in a pinch but the screen size is a bit annoying when surfing the net.
Wondering the same thing. My cousins all got the new Kindle Fire, but the lack of a 3G/4G network was a pitfall. I've looked at iPads as well, but am leaning towards getting a whole new computer.
I'm going to be in rural Poland for a good junk of the summer, Nowa Ruda down by Prague, and I'm thinking of just using my Droid phone and getting a 3G plan for the month and a half I'll be gone. I have Skype and Netflix along with the internet/email.
How is the 3G in rural Europe? I used my phone once or twice for wi-fi last summer, and didn't have too great of luck.
I don't know what you mean by rural Europe. I've used my Kindle to download books while on a train through the agrarian Piemonte of Italy. No problem except when I went through tunnels. But even though there is nothing but tiny towns and countryside out the window, it's an area with 3 major modern cities less than 100 miles away, and extensive cell phone coverage, so maybe that makes a difference.
But there is a nice viewpoint I can walk to 10 minutes from my house where I can see Italy's sixth largest city, but I can't get a cell phone connection. If I walk back home, no problem. So if you might want to ask your Polish neighbors if there are any well-known dead spots where you can't get reception.
I will be in a small city on the edge of the Carpathian Mountains. I'll take a look into the 3G coverage from my phone provider. I've had a lot of friends have no issues with wi-fi on their phones, computers, and other devices. I've never talked to anyone that has used their 3G capable phones.
3G can be expensive to use, WiFi is always available in major cities but less so in rural locations. Can not speak to your trip plan locations ... I have used 3G in more than 20 countries and have both good and bad experience. In some locations the network is overloaded so you can not get access or the performance is so bad that it drives you crazy. Other places it is nearly as fast as WiFi. Many times, rural areas are much better than large cities. If you are going to use 3G then investigate getting a local plan. I have used my iPhone as a data device and it works (good for email, but a chore with screen size surfing the net). Several discussions in the Forum (use the search feature) discussing phones, data plans, etc.
Also, for a 3 month stay, you might save yourself a lot of headaches if you just pay for an ADSL connection through a fixed phone line in your lodgings, plus buy a router for wi-fi. Haven't a clue how that would be arranged for in Poland. In Italy, I would probably try to work it out with a landlord that if he/she would get the contract and do the set up, I would pay for the router, any installation/start-up costs, and re-imburse the landlord for 3 months of usage, and he/she could keep it all when I left.

You might want to do this well in advance of your stay, usually setting up an ADSL connection will have a lead time, sometimes it could months. Check it out with your prospective landlord.
After arriving in Snn. go West to Doolin for your first night . stay at Callanan's . go to all three pubs Gussies , McGoverns or McCanns for good trad music esp that wkend. then work your way up the coast to Ballyvaughn and into Galway. Best beauty in Ireland. also you can take in the Cliffs of Moher down below Doolin if you have time. You really need at least two day in that area....It is splendid area. as for the car get a 5 speed vs auto . Dan Dooley is ok they all will haggle but you willl need the extra ins... as the roads are narrow except for the n18 ete. hope this helps.. will be in Dub on the 20th . the hotels in the airport are just ok but I found the Carlton as the better of them . and they have a shuttle to and from the airport. they seem to be a bit more cordial and they have a rest . that alot of locals go so the food is ok/ if you get to Doolin you will probably not want to leave... it is a magical part of Eire.....

This seems a bit lost here ... the discussion was tablet (as in iPad) ... not Ireland?
