Hello,

I will be in France and Spain for about two weeks and am planning on definitely bringing my cell phone and possibly my iPod to pass time on the plane, metro, etc.  I've read that both a converter and adapter is needed, but I'm at a loss as to what might be a good brand or even how it works.  (Last time I was in Europe for a shorter period of time and didn't need either for my electronics.)  Any recommendations?  Also, since it's for a short period of time, any thoughts on getting the iPod adapter/converter used and, if so, from where?

In my experience the only thing you'll need for battery charging is a plug adaptor, very cheap and available on any travel website such as magellans.com.  Just to be sure I looked on the Samsung website to see what they say regarding my netbook:

The AC adapter that comes with your Samsung netbook PC accepts input voltages of 100 volts to 240 volts. Therefore, you can use your computer worldwide without a voltage adapter

However, in most countries, the configuration of the wall outlet differs from the wall outlet configuration in the U.S. To use your netbook in another country, you need to purchase either a power cord with a plug that fits into the outlets in the countries you plan to visit or an appropriate foreign travel plug adapter you can attach to the plug on the AC adapter.

You can purchase foreign travel plug adapters at Radio Shack, Best Buy, Staples, and similar stores.

Travel plug adapters are also available at Target, Walmart, and any luggage store.

You should only need the proper plug adaptor, not a voltage converter. To be sure, look on your device or its plug--if it has numbers  something like 110-220 or 120-240, then it is a dual voltage device.  Used to be you would flip a switch to change voltages, but most are automatic now.

Had anyone used an IPOD in England and Italy, and have they been successful using wi fi and getting on the net, and navigating in each of these countries?   If so, how did they set their IPOD to work?  I am thinking of buying an IPOD instead of lugging around my computer, in order to surf, speak on the phone and send texts and emails.  Is that possible with an IPOD.  Which IPOD should I get?

The Shuffle, Nano, and Classic do not have Internet capability. You cannot "set" them to access the Internet.  The iPod Touch and the iPhone do have built-in wi-fi. They come with an e-mail program and a web browser (Safari) and the ability to view video, read e-books, and take photos and video. They automatically seek out the nearest wi-fi connection. (If you get the iPhone, be sure to turn off 3G data in Europe, because data roaming is amazingly expensive. However, wi-fi is available at no extra charge.)

The iPad is larger is easier on the eyes than the iPod Touch and iPhone. It takes up more room than a phone but less than a computer.

I had no trouble accessing the Internet in Europe with my iPhone and iPad. The only glitch was that some of the hotel wi-fi systems require a password.

Be sure to get a British and a Continental European plug adapter. Most electronic stores sell sets of plug adapters that should cover all countries of the world. Apple products automatically adjust to differences in voltage, but you will need to plug your North American plug into the adapter plug. For example, plugs in Britain have slanted prongs, and plugs in Continental Europe, including Italy, have round pins.
