Yes, I purchased my own at home ... updated with the latest maps and POI's. I have used a GPS unit for the past 5 trips. I have a Garmin with live traffic update capabilities (my first, then more bulky, unit was a TomTom ... nice but the maps updates were more expensive than buying a new unit with lifetime free updates). The M roads are loaded with speed cameras so it paid for itself with warnings (saved me a ticket, I am sure). I recommend using the GPS with a good map (they act as solid team). Today, Lifetime free map updates are standard with many models ... go that route. You can get a nice unit at a reasonable price (electronics in general are pretty inexpensive nowdays). Renting a GPS in a rental car is expensive ... breakeven for a single trip is around 8 days rental (also, rental car GPS units are always out of day with their maps) -- a bought GPS is free thereafter.

We have a Garmin 255W and we purchased the United Kingdom Sandisk but of course you can download the maps from Garmin website. I wouldn't be without my GPS in the United Kingdom as it is great. All you need do is put in the postal code and it will tke you to the front door. Then of course it does many more things such as restaurants etcetera. Last year my brother-in-law joined us but in his own car rental and he had the TomTom which he didn't find as helpful but one must take the time to learn how to use it. One word of caution..if you attach it to your windshield be sure to erase the circle mark it leaves as that tells a party tht you have one...but best to take it in with you whenever you leave the car. Bottom line...I wouldn't leave home without my GPS...
