I am going with a friend to London, (this will be the first time for her) for 6 days and I was thinking of taking her on a one day trip to Oxford (I have also been there before), and I was thinking of maybe going for one night to Brighton. I have never been there and heard wonderful things but since we're going in April I am not sure if it will warrant staying the night there, or if we should go and come in the same day.
If you think it would be worth it, what are the things we should do? the must sees. We are in our late 50's, and we do like the wonderful restaurants and nightlife.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
It's not clear from your post whether you are aware that Brighton is the Gay capital of England. If you are aware, and that is part of the attraction, then I would think that an overnight stay would make sense, to allow you to participate in, or observe, the night club scene, etc.
If your visit is simply as a tourist, I'd say, why bother staying overnight. Its only an hour by train from London, you can see the attractions easily in a day (Royal Pavilion, seafront/pier, the Lanes), and who needs the hassle of packing up, unpacking, packing up again, etc. Better to just return to your London lodgings.
I agree with Ron. Unless there's a particular reason you'd like to stay in Brighton I'd do it as a daytrip. I think the Pavilion is the most outstanding feature and maybe a stroll though the Lanes, as Ron mentions. Otherwise there are nicer places to have an overnight by the sea.
Thank you for letting me know, I was not aware that it was the gay capital of England. I wasn't aware either that Mykonos is the gay capital of Greece.
We'll do as you say, just go for the day. Thanks !!
Yikes! I did that once and Brighton was tad scary at night. MANY clubs and streets congested with young people drinking.
I think one night out of town is a great idea and would suggest Bath. You can get a train there. It is a BEAUTIFUL city. The Roman Baths are fabulous, there is the Costume Museum and the Bath Cathedral. At night take the Bizarre Bath Walking Tour.
Thank you - I have been to Bath before but stayed there just during the day - is there a nightlife there? what do we do? Can you recommend any good restaurants?
