Will be traveling to London in July - before the Olympics, with my wife.  We are considering whether to stay in a hotel or apartment and also don't know which areas of London are better than others.  We want to be near restaurants and shops and be near the tube.  Also, do apartments usually have air conditioning?  Thanks.

No, apts (flats) do not usually have air conditioning.  In September 2011, three friends and I rented a 3 bedroom/2 bath flat in Bloomsbury through HomeAway.  In Feb 2010, I rented a flat in Avignon, France also through HomeAway.  Both rentals were great!  HomeAWay has much smaller studio-type rentals, too.
My favorite area in London is Bloomsbury.  When by myself or with my son, we stay at the Morgan Hotel, literally just around the corner from the British Museum.  I love this area; it's 1 1/2 blocks from the Tube, a 5-10 minute walk to Trafalgar Square, and a 5 minute walk to Soho.  Look at this area on a London map, and you'll see how centrally located it is.  BTW, the Morgan Hotel does have A/C!  And a great English breakfast.  This is a family owned hotel, not fancy, but very comfortable and decent sized rooms.  And, no, I do not own stock in it!
