Has anyone been to/stayed in the the town of St. Mawes in Cornwall?  What is the easiest way to get there from London?  Flying, driving, or train?  Is the drive from London a nice one?

We have a family wedding there in May and are finding that for a short trip from the US, it is not easy to get to.

This is a slightly different question than the one you asked on the other forum.

I wouldn't consider driving unless you need a car once you get there.

The train question was answered on the other board.

I'm sure flying from Gatwick to Newquay would be fine.  I suspect the transfer from Newquay to St Mawes would be a royal pain by public transport.

www.flybe.com fly from Gatwick to Newquay. Getting from Newquay to St.Mawes could be difficult. Then you have to add in getting between Heathrow & Gatwick plus you might only have 2 flights a day. You might wish to consider going all the by land travel.

You could go by train. See www.nationalrail.co.uk In the boxes, put in for a journey from Heathrow to Falmouth (& return). This will tell you to take the Heathrow Express into Paddington (inc in price) and then a Great Western long distance express to Truro in Cornwall where you change for a local train for the last few miles to Falmouth.

Alternatively, go to www.nationalrail.co.uk again and put in for a journey from Reading to Falmouth (& back) which will be cheaper. Then go to www.railair.com and check out the Heathrow to Reading coach link - which you would pay for separately. The choice then would be between these two. However, it would save you time (& a bit of cost) if a relative could meet you off the express at St.Austell and then drive you down to St.Mawes - and do the same for the return.

You have a third option. Go to www.nationalexpress.com and put in for your journey from Heathrow to Falmouth (& back). You will find that going by coach all the way takes around 7 hours. However, please note that the frequency of such coaches in rare & the frequency of the trains is much greater.

Fares will vary depending on time of year v demand. Rail tickets can be booked up to 3 months in advance. (Friday afternoons are dearest).

Not sure if you go from Falmouth Docks? Check this out with ferry company.

Having got to Falmouth, you then can take a ferry to St.Mawes. See http://www.falriver.co.uk/frl/ferries/st_mawes_ferry/timetable

Alternatively, you can hire a car & drive all the way. See www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

St.Mawes is a wonderful place. I can't understand why you are going all the way to the UK and then making the journey to Cornwall for a wedding and then leaving again. Cornwall is probably the most popular County in the UK amongst Brits taking holidays at home.
