I will be in London overnight and am wondering about using the Tube from Gatwick to central London. My plane doesn't arrive until 9:30 p.m. but we are planning to see some of the sights since we have a 12 hour layover. Thought if we could take the tube into London then we would just get a Black Taxi and have them drive us to/past Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, etc. and then return to the hotel at Gatwick via Tube for a nap before resuming our flight the next day. I have several questions, never having visited London or used the tube... Does the Tube run 24 hours? Is it safe to take at night or the wee hours of the morning? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!
The Tube/Underground does not go to Gatwick. You can take a train (either Gatwick Express or regular) to Victoria Station. Trains run through the night, the Tube stops shortly after midnight.
Well thanks so much! We were going by what a friend of my husband said and assumed that the Tube ran thru there! Guess we should have checked it out instead of just taking someone's word. I appreciate you letting me know. So...we could take the train at any hour - that is good info to know. Have you taken this train late at night before? How is is and how expensive is it? I will check out your website.
However, you have such a strange (late night) layover at Gatwick I'd be inclined to either stay at an airport hotel (and I mean right at the airport), or go into Crawley or Horley, two tiny towns less than 10 minutes from Gatwick. Both have multiple B&Bs, and these establishments take people to the airport for free!
I've stayed in Horley, good restaurants, not much to see, but then you won't be seeing much at night in London. At any rate, go to tripadvisor.com and check out fellow traveler reviews re staying at Gatwick Airport, or surrounding towns. So many airport hotels have bad ratings due to poor service - guess they figure they'll never see you again, so why try?
