In reviewing various events that will take place in Italy in April, I noticed the Artichoke Festival in Ladispoli, which is less than an hour by train from Rome.  The dates for the festival this year are April 13, 14, and 15.  It is the 62nd Sagra del Carciofo Romanesco.

In conjunction with this sagra, from April 2 through April 15, the local restaurants will serve special multi-course meals at 21 euros per person that feature artichokes in every course.

At the following link is the list of restaurants that participated in 2011 and what each restaurant was serving then:

Many other towns in Italy celebrate the artichoke with their own sagras.  We attended one in Ramacca, Sicily, a few years ago.  At that sagra, there were many restaurants serving very reasonably priced sagra meals and stands set up roasting the artichokes.  There was also a parade with several bands.  Here is excellent information about it: http://theartichokeblog.com/ramacca-sicily/#more-46

There are very famous ones in Cerda (close to Palermo), where there is an artichoke statue in the main piazza and in Nescemi, which will be held March 23-25.

We missed attending the sagra in Cerda last year because the public transportation from Palermo was quite limited and we were scheduled to depart Palermo the next day.  However, the sagra in Ladispoli is especially attractive because the train transportation from Rome is so good. You can check that out at:

If any readers have attended the Ladispoli sagra, I hope they'll report on it.
