Hello:

I will be visiting the amalfi coast in March and would like to take a few one-day cooking classes from a really good chef. Has anyone taken any classes organized by the companies, Cooking Vacations or Ciao Laura? Both of these companies are actually based in the U.S. with offices in Italy. I'd like to hear from anyone that could give me a review or recommend other classes.

Any other class suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm mainly interested in hands-on type classes held in a working kitchen or a beautiful villa kitchen. Thanks so much!

Julie

Rbon:  Thanks for your post. I did that originally and have looked into some of those. Most classes that I found are organized by American businesses or travel experts.

I was really hoping to hear some reviews of these schools and classes from those who have participated.

I've not personally done ii, but arthur schwartz team up with an Italian to offer cooking classes near Salerno, which is not out of reach of the places you named. Do a google search for "arthur schwartz cooking school campanga" and such. I think you'll easily find it. It's rather famous.

Also, if you haven't tried chowhound or egullet, you might.

Thank you for this, Sharon.  I will be in Sorrento in April and would love to take a cooking class.

Try L'Altracostiera based in Amalfi. They run a variety of day trips / events and I seem to recall a cooking class advertised years ago. Even if not listed, drop them an email to ask, as they're very much a local operation and will know of other things going on.

regards

Ian

Ian S:  Thank you. That is an excellent idea! I'm interested in the local organizations so L'Altracostiera would be a really good contact.

I'd like to add another recommendation for the L'Altracostiera agency http://www.altracostiera.com/ based in Amalfi.  As Ian said, it is very much a local business.  Rosella, the owner, and her uncle were both extras in the 2005 movie filmed in Amalfi (and thereabouts) with Helen Hunt and Scarlet Johansson, "A Good Woman."  Rosella and her staff are responsive and know the Amalfi Coast inside out.  They know every property that they rent, too.  And they do list a cooking class.

Hello,

i have a cooking school in Florence and I collaborate with the international kitchen in the US.
I know that they have some one in Amalfi coast...so what I can suggest you is to call them and ask who's the best in the area.

Have fun in cooking.
