We will be in Rome on the last Sunday of the month and thought we would visit the Vatican Museum and take advantage of the free offer.  Do you still need tickets or do you have to stand in line to get in?  How busy is it then?  Could we then visit the Basilica of St. Peters in the afternoon?  Is entry limited to the church?
Again, thanks for taking the time to answer.

I would be very concerned about the crowds, although I'm sure the savings is very tempting. Mushroom in this forum has recommended visiting in the afternoon, from 3 pm on, to avoid the worst of the crowds. (She visited Rome last month.)

I'm sure you would have to stand in line to get some sort of admission ticket, even though it's free.  Everyone who enters has to go through a security screening.  You could visit the Basilica of St. Peter's in the afternoon.

You can find more information here:

I really can't advise about the scene on free-admission days, especially since I don't know what month you are talking about.

I deliberately arranged my last trip to Rome to be there at the least crowded time of the year for visiting the Vatican museums -- January after the Epiphany.  The evening I arrived in Rome, on my way back from dinner, I happened to walk past an art gallery where the door was half-open, so I stuck in my head for a peek. I struck up a conversation with the artist owner, and when I mentioned why I was in Rome,  he instantly said: "Don't go to the Vatican on a weekend. And go in the afternoon!" When I reminded him this was January, he repeated his advice.

So I pass this Roman artist's advice along to you.
