My 14 yr old daugter and I are planning a trip for first 10 days in April. Since it's just the two of us -- and I will have to do all the logistics -- I don't want to get too complicated. This is our first visit so we just want a taste of Spain. We live in a big city and like cities, but like to get away to smaller places. My current thought is the following and would like any advice:

Fly into Madrd -- 1 night & day just to get over jet lag and see Prado

Train to either Toledo or Avila or Salamenca -- 1 night

Train to Sevilla -- 2-3 days

Train to Granda - to see Alahm. (should we stay overnight?)

Rent car from either Sev or Gran to do 1-2 days Ronda and White Village drive/tour

End with 3 days to relax in some coastal town????

Train back to Madrid

My question about coastal town is that I don't like built up touristy places and don't know if there is an option that is not like that?? Any recommendations on coast? Of is there somewher else small that you would recommend to relax/just enjoy. It won't really be swimming weather anyway, but I think my daughter would like some sun. All advice welcome

Visiting the Alhambra takes the better part of a day so you will likely wish to stay the night.  Also, consider flying into Madrid and out of another city to avoid trecking back to Madrid.

What white villages did you have in mind?  The Sierra Nevada south of  Granada has some fantastic scenery but it can be rather remote.

You might also consider:

Passing on Madrid.  Traveling to and from Madrid just to see one museum (even one as great as the Prado) isn't very partical.

Cadiz is would make a nice place to visit near the end of your trip.  It exotic and romantic and a relatively easy train ride to Seville or Jerez for a flight home.  If you are looking for somewhere quiet, the beaches south of Cadiz and around El Palmar (nr. Vejer de la Frontera) are relatively undeveloped and made for a relaxing visit where I was there in April.

Sorry for delayed reply and thank you for your reply. Sooooooo, we are coming from u.s. so flying into madrid or barcelona make the most sense econmically.  I was thinking tho of what you suggested, and going straight to seville and making that our base.  i am sure madrid and prado are fantastic, but we live in DC and go to NYC many times a year soooooo we have many art options.
as to white villages, i read a driving itinierary of about 3 days, starting rondo, need to look back at the exact villages.  as to cadiz, i have read differnt things.  Is it really built up? are there smaller nearby town options that are not?  i just want to end with 3 days to relax, and maybe it doesn
t need to be by the sea. any other suggestions by sea or otherwise?

Vejer de la Frontera for 3-4 nights.  Perhaps in an apartment rental.  Extremely relaxed vibe but with plenty of places to eat and drink.  It is hilly and scenic and very much the white village.  If you can swing a good view, you can see Africa during the daytime (and the lights from there at night).  Fantastic beaches are within a 20 minute, virtually traffic-free drive.  I'm sure there are other places in the vincity that are just as nice but this just happens to be one that I am familiar with.  Jerez would also make for a nice relaxing place to end your trip.

Cadiz is beautiful but it can be crowded with European college students altough I don't think it would be in April except perhpas on weekends.  It really is an incredibly beautiful city with the old town being much preferable to the long boardwalk and beach that is more reminsicent of let's say Virginia Beach or Atlantic City or a crowded beach in Florida.
