We've got our tickets to Livingstone and later on to Kruger. I'd love to go to Okavango Delta, but will probably be staying in Chobe. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how 'choppy' is is in the small planes to Okavango Delta as my husband gets seriously motion sickness in small planes and boats. Once in Hawaii, he was sick almost half of our vacation after taking a glass bottom boat tour. The Grand Canyon was no cake walk either for him. He takes a lot of medication for a serious health problem and insists on not taking motion sickness meds as it may create a problem for his other meds. Now, while I'd love to go to Okavango Delta, I don't want to miss half of the trip due to a husband with air sickness. Is is choppy or smooth sailing? Does anyone know. Also, as I understand it, that is about the only way to get there, true? Thanks for your input.
Hi again, Caroline. I've flown in lots of little planes in Africa and never really experienced bad stuff (I'm keeping my fingers crossed now for future small-craft flights!). I've done flights over the Delta in aircrafts that sat between 4-12 passengers and the sailing was smooth. Incredibly (and to this day I still don't understand it), my wife who hates and fears flying loved those little planes over the Delta. Can your husband do patches (Transderm Scop)? Maybe that would help with preventing motion sickness.
Thanks, Steve. I've tried to get him to try the patches before, but to no avail. If it's been smooth for you, I'll take another look at it. I'm not afraid of small planes (neither is he), but I get a little squeamish at the idea of the small boats and canoes with all the animals in the water there. Not somewhere that I'd want to go for a dip in the water.
I had wanted to stay for a few days in Chobe at Chobe Safari Lodge, but I just learned they are full. The same thing happened in Kruger where I wanted the Elephant Plains Game Lodge. I know I am a little late in trying to book, but I was waiting on the doc to give his go ahead. So, I'm sort of back to square one and trying to make a decision. I'm hoping some of those I'm looking at will come available later, but I don't know if that will happen.
We did a mokoro ride while down at Nxabega. The water, at least at that time, was not that deep so we didn't really see any hippos. It was just a very serene, quiet, and relaxing time as the guide poled us around.
