I'll be in Israel for a week in February and plan to swap out my phone's SIM card for a local prepaid SIM. I'd appreciate any information or advice on brands and types for Israel. Our use would be calls within Israel, plus minimal web use and google maps.

Thanks for any help!

I use Orange but at least one other company uses SIM cards. That said, it may not be worth it for one week because you must buy the card and minutes. You may add minutes later and they will not be lost if you use the account at least once a year. That makes it worth it if you stay for an extended time, I stay 3 weeks, and return within the year.

An Israeli prepaid sim card may be picked up at any telephone shop for about 170NIS.  This includes the sim card and time.  Instructions with the package show you how to set it up for english.  If you put time on the card at least once a year, you will keep the number.  Make sure your phone is unlocked and is an international phone.  (i.e. quad band)  The length of your trip may not make the cost of a simcard worthwhile unless you are planning multiple trips.  We go every year and have two simcards. it works out very nicely. Several attractions require advance reservations, so a phone is useful.  however if you are on a tour, your tourguide will take care of reservations.
