Can anyone recommend a tour guide for a private tour, there are so many it is overwhelming.  We want a guide who is not only knowledgable but fun as well.  So far I am considering  Moti

When will you be travelling to Israel? is it a first trip? What's your religious heritage? (Some guides work better with Jewish heritage tours as opposed to Christian pilgrimages or a general cultural tour.)

You should speak to your potential guide by phone before the tour and get a sense of his/her personality in order to decide with whom to work.

I don't know them -- but that is not a negative comment on them.  You are right; there are many licensed guides.

My personal favorites are Madeleine Lavine, based in Jerusalem; David Wexler, based in Tel Aviv, and Oreet Segal, based in the northern Negev, I believe.  Richard Woolf specializes in the North, and is very well spoken of.  I also love Adam Sela for the Negev.

But again, your people may be just fine.  I would suggest you speak with each by telephone (buy cheap minutes at www.onesuite.com), and see how well you understand the guide, how well he or she listens to what you want, the degree of patience and helpfulness, and otherwise good fit.  I also look for guides who will not inject their own politics or biases into the tour.

Good luck!
