I'll be traveling to Tel Aviv in july and spending 7 days there. What are the top interesting things to do or see there besides the obvious, such as beach, museums, etc? Also, what is the best airline to use out of LAX to get there? How about currency? Is american dollar good to use or convert to local money?
HI! I hope if you are going all the way to Israel you are planning to see more than Tel Aviv. Minimally you should be spending at least 3 of your 7 nights in Jerusalem. ( and probably 4 of them) In terms of which airline--first you have to decide if you want a non-stop flight, I believe only El Al does that--twice a week. Then you decide if you want an American carrier in which case you would make connections somewhere in the US, or do you want a European carrier.
The official currency of Israel is the shekel and you should plan on converting money to the shekel. While some stores will accept the dollar the exchange rate they will offer is usually very unfavorable. If you rent a chair/umbrella on the beach I doubt he wants dollars. He wants shekels!
I agree with the above comment -- I doubt if you want shekels in Los Angeles. If they take dollars, you will get a terrible exchange rate. Just use your US ATM card to withdraw shekels from ATMs in Israel -- it's easy.
As for suggestions, I would be happy to share my free, noncommercial guide to Israel travel, a 49-page .pdf file that I share with anyone who asks. If interested, just e-mail me at Labatt@fuse.net, and I'll send it as a file attachment via return e-mail. No strings -- I'm a labor and employment lawyer, not in the travel business. But it would give you some ideas for touring Tel Aviv and the rest of Israel. Live2go is right -- try to see at least Jerusalem.
Yes, will definitely be making time for 3-4 days in Jerusalem. Thanks for the input. How about the food? I will be eating everything put in front of me. But is there something I should be careful with?
