I'm going to be traveling to Capetown in about 8 months and I have heard that just about all safari trips begin and end in Johannesburg, so I was trying to decide whether to fly out of Johannesburg and try to time the safari to end a day or so before I leave. Can anyone tell me if that is true? I'd like to start and finish a safari from capetown if possible so I can fly in and out of there. I don't plan on booking the safari until I get there.
Great to see that you're planning to come visit us. Many tours depart and arrive in Cape Town each week. Some of them are short round trips, that may include a safari at a private game reserve in the Western Cape or Eastern Cape provinces (states). The reserves in the Western Cape are all located on former farmland, and are more suited for those who can't make it to the major wildlife areas in the country's north and east. Some of the reserves in the Eastern Cape are also like this, but some (Addo, Shamwari, Sambona) are first-class and can be compared to the afore-mentioned wildlife areas. Cape Town's 'problem' is that it is so far away from the 'real' wildlife/safari areas. This is why most people take a safari from/to Johannesburg, which is less that one day's drive away from Kruger National Park and the surrounding plethora of private wildlife reserves. My suggestion? Plan your departure flight to depart from Johannesburg so that you can visit Kruger and surrounds, and book a cheap flight from Cape Town to Jo'burg. There are many, many daily flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg (the route is one of the ten most busiest domestic routes in the world), some of which can be way under $100 one way. See South African Airways, British Airways-Comair, Mango, kulula, 1Time, and Velvet Sky.
I agree with Darren. It would be a shame to miss Kruger and the Sabi Sands area. We were there in Sept/Oct. and it was the trip of our lives and we've traveled extensively. My husband who was just 'okay' with it in the beginning can't say enough good things about it now. We actually sacrificed Cape Town to be able to take additional safaris. You'll have a great time in Southern Africa.
Thanks very much, I've gone ahead and done a departure from Johannesburg, so I will do one tour from cape town in the south of the country and one departing from Johannesburg that goes through Kruger, botwsana and zimbabwe up to Victoria falls. I'm definitely looking forward to it, now I just need to get the flights to Johannesburg and back from Livingstone.
Great to see that you're heading out this way. With regards to the flight from Livingstone to Jo'burg, have a look at the no-frills airline called 1time, in addition to the 'big two' of South African Airways and British Airways-Comair.
