Are there places to shop that carry allergen free foods (like Whole Foods in the USA)?

Thanks!

Hi Danielle.   I suspect that if you stayed at one of the lodges you'd find them accommodating if you let them know when you book.  I know at a couple of them asked us to list any food requirements, etc.   I don't know about shopping for specific foods as we found it difficult to know what would be found in stores.   I would suspect you'd spend a lot of time looking for stores that carried it, but we did notice that one huge pharmacy in Nelspruit(I've forgotten the name, but it was something like chem-something) had a couple of large aisles devoted to organic foods and related items. I believe it's a chain in SA.  I'd suggest asking the lodges before booking.   Many of them have chefs, so it may be possible if you plan in advance.   Hope that helps.

Alert your concierge to that fact and he will let you know where to shop and so on. Some of our traditional food does have dairy you will have to enquire with the chef at the restaurant that you eat at.

Hi Danielle,

As Caroline and Evander have recommended, you could advise the chef should you be staying at accommodations that are also providing your meal/s. However, you've also asked if there is anywhere to self-purchase some of your allergen free-specific foods. Our main supermarket chains include Checkers, Shoprite, Spar, Pick'n'Pay, and Woolworths. I would recommend looking at the latter three before the first two. To give you an idea of brand names and availability, have a look on the South Africa-based online shopping website called Faithful To Nature (www.faithful-to-nature.co.za). It's where my family and I do most of our shopping and includes all of your 'pantry-based' dry goods. My partner isn't fond of wheat- and dairy-based food, so please feel free to ask me any more specific questions should you still be a bit concerned. South Africa is both a developed and developing nation, so it can often depend on your location within the country as to what allergen-free food is available.

Regards from Cape Town,

Darren C Humphrys
