I'm looking for transportation ideas from Hobby in Houston to Galveston and return to Hobby.  Are there any accommodations in Galveston that provide shuttle service from Hobby to a Hotel in Galveston. We would also like to do some sightseeing from conclusion of cruise April 22 through 26l. We fly from Hobby to DFW Friday 27 April 2012. We would stay in Galveston for several days, and travel to other suggested locations if some are made.

Arthur...you might get more responses and local information if you re-post this on the Texas board in the U.S. section of the forum. This section is mainly for people interested in cruises.

Arthur, Hobby is the closest airport but is still about 45 miles from Galveston. You might want to contact the cruise line or Google something like "Hobby to Galveston hotel shuttle." I wish I could give you more info about that or tours to do, but I live in Houston and honestly haven't been to Galveston since before Hurricane Ike. I can tell you that Moody Gardens is a lot of fun and may be something you'd like to check out. They have penguins (my personal favorite) and a rainforest pyramid and a lot of fun and interesting things there. You could also look into historic home tours of the gorgeous Victorians that survived the 1900 hurricane. (Ashton Villa is the only one I remember off the top of my head...

Galveston has some nice rest. and many hotels have shuttles to and from the cruise dock.  If you go early and check in your luggage then you can walk the old downtown area before boarding the ship - it's that close.  Enjoy!

I am with Katie as far as a shuttle goes.  Galveston has quite a bit of sightseeing.  The cruise ships dock right at the downtown area which is home to "The Strand".  Galveston was once the Wall St. of the South.  Their are beautiful old buildings, gift shops, restaurants, hotels and museums in this area.  Most of the year the beautiful ship "Alissa" is docked here and can be toured.  She is a perfectly restored old wooden sailing ship.  There are many beautiful old homes and mansions to tour.  Moody Gardens is not withing walking distance but is worth a visit.  It is pricey but you can search online for discounts.  THere is also a submarine and I believe a small naval ship.   GAlveston is one of the most historic cities in the South and I would recommend you do some research and find what interests you.  Space Center is between Hobby Airport and Galveston not far off I-45; if you are interested in the space program.  The city of Houston has a pretty good museum district which is also near the zoo.  Between LaPorte and Deer Park is the San Jacinto Monument and the USS Texas.  If you go here, I would recommend the Monument Inn restaurant that is almost next door.  Very good seafood.  Hope you have a wonderful time.  Mary

We have sailed out of Galveston 3 times. It is a bit of a distance from the airports to Galveston island. I have not found any free shuttles. There are several limo co. in both Gal. and Houston that we have used ,they are not cheap but no rip off either. Galveston is our favorite port to sail from [24 cruises from all ports] There is lots to do on the island. Good restaurants , good hotels and motels in all price ranges. Usually fairly organized embarkation and disembarkation altho with more ships coming to Gal. that may change. Depending when you are arriving in Houston you may want to use the cruise lines transfer service .

I tried several travel sites to ask the same question over the last few months.  I did not get any good info.  I called the several limo and shuttle companies that service the area and they were expensive (more expensive than the cruise transport) and not accomodating. For example, Galveston Shuttle, which was recommended by several people was more expensive than the cruise line by about $10 a person each way and the first shuttle leaving the airport (Hobby) for the port was at 11:30am.  We wanted to be there by then! We stayed at a Marriott in Houston which at least gave us free shuttle to and from the airport. We returned to the airport the next morning at 9:30 and took the ships (RCCL) first shuttle to the ship which came at 10:30.
While we were waiting for our shuttle to the hotel we met another couple who had gotten a package deal with La Quinta Inns in Houston.  They were paying $179 for a shuttle to the hotel, night's lodging, morning breakfast, shuttle to the ship the next morning and shuttle from the ship to the airport after the cruise.  I believe that was for the couple and if so seems to be a good deal. I cannot speak to the service or hotel because I only saw them before the cruise. I know the hotel was in the same area of airport hotels that ours was in.

You can ask your travel agent, she or he will be able to answer all of your questions and book the best accomodations and flights for your particular interests.   Good Luck!

We flew from Dallas to Hobby in May 2010. We contacted the Super Shuttle for pick up and they took us to a hotel on Galveston Island. The cost for 2 people was $100.....plus tip. We met a couple at the hotel who had flown into Bush airport and had taken a taxi and they said the cost was $140.
