Travel insurance policies have numerous options for Medical/Dental and Emergency Medical Evacuation. But I haven't seen any statistics that suggest how much of these coverages is considered adequate f

IÂ’m the original poster in this thread, which seems for the most part to have veered away from my inquiry about adequate coverage amounts for health/medical expenses when buying travel insurance.

I should have pointed out that the coverage amounts I inquired about werenÂ’t meant to supplement any existing health/medical insurance policy, since I donÂ’t have one. As far as potential medical expenses go, IÂ’m actually more concerned about the medical (medical/dental) coverage than the medical evacuation. Medical evacuation tends to be covered for at least $100,000 anyway, whereas the options for medical/dental start at $10,000 and go up from there, with corresponding rises in premium costs.

As a general response to those who replied thinking I already had health/medical insurance coverage at home that could be used abroad, my impression is that most or all HMOÂ’s --which now provide much of the coverage in the U.S., rather than indemnity insurers -- lack provisions for coverage outside the U.S. Is that not the case?

Earlnjanet (#1), thanks for the IAMAT information. IAMAT provides a worthwhile service to travelers but is, as far as I know, limited to medical services rendered in the course of doctorÂ’s visits, and would not, for example, extend to any hospital &/or surgical services or costs resulting from an accident, severe illness or other emergency. Those costs could be astronomically higher than those for doctorsÂ’ visits.

Holger f. (#15), since youÂ’re presumably German, I donÂ’t think you need to worry about what you read here. From what I know about health care in Germany, you have a pretty good safety net (travel included).
